In January 2020, Benny Goodman, a tourist guide, read an email on his cellphone. It was a detailed itinerary of a Java-Bali overland tour for a group of American tourists that will arrive in Jakarta in July.
July 20, 2020. Benny, a handsome young man in his early thirties, was preparing for work very early in the morning.
He was a Muslim, so he got up very early to observe early morning prayer. After that, he got dressed and left for the airport by train.
I am ready at Sukarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. I went from my house on the outskirts of Jakarta early in the morning by train. At 7 a.m., I am ready at the arrival gate. I still had two hours. So I sat on a bench near the gate and read my cell phone for the latest news. The group will arrive from Hong Kong.
Sukarno Hatta International Airport is located to the west of the capital city of Jakarta. Sukarno is the name of the first president of Indonesia. Muhammad Hatta is the name of the first vice president.
It is a big airport. It is one of the biggest airports in Southeast Asia. Every two minutes, there are takeoffs and landings from and to many parts of the world.
It has three terminals. I was waiting in terminal three, gate 10. It is the gate for international arrivals from Asian countries.
The airport serves approximately sixty million passengers per year. So it is really busy.
Its style of architecture is modern. There is no local style at all. It is beautiful, but in my opinion, there is no soul in it. There is not much difference in style with other international airports. I think the local style of architecture gives it more attraction.
At 9.15. There was an announcement that the plane had landed. I walked slowly to the arrival gate. There is still one more hour to wait, but I had to find a good place to welcome my guests. As the passengers from Hong Kong came out of the gate, I came closer. I had a cardboard board in my hands with the name of the group written on it. Shortly after that, someone was waving at me. It was Ronald, the tour director from Ron White Travel, that I knew over the past five years.
Ron was a handsome man. I believe he was in his fifties, but he still looked like a thirty-year-old young man. He was still slim and a little muscular.
He wore his sunglasses, which made him look like a Hollywood actor.
Hi Ben
Hi Ron, how are you?
Very well, thank you. How are you?
Very well. This way, please.
I asked the group to step away from the crowd.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet my friend Benny. He is the local guide here. He will guide us from here all the way to Bali.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, Nice to see you, and welcome to Jakarta. Please follow me to the bus. It is over there in the parking lot.
Good morning
I took them to the bus. About fifteen minutes later, all of them were on the bus.
Ron, is everybody here?
Yes, there are twenty passengers plus me.
Okay, we leave now.
Let’s go
How was the flight? I hope it was pleasant.
It was good, but we are very tired after a long flight from America. So we want to have a good rest in a good hotel.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are going directly to your hotel. It is a five-star hotel.
Good
"Your hotel is excellent. It has modern facilities and a local style of architecture. The view is splendid because it is located on the slope of a mountain. Your rooms overlook a beautiful valley and a mountain.
Is it far from here?
No, it is located on the outskirts of Jakarta, about twenty kilometers from here. So it will take approximately thirty minutes to get there, depending on the traffic.
Is there a good swimming pool?
Yes, of course there is an excellent swimming pool. I will show you later. There are five restaurants there, serving Western, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, and Chinese food.
.
Good
Today you are free. And tomorrow, we will leave Jakarta. We will visit the Botanical Garden in Bogor, then after lunch we will proceed to Bandung, the capital of West Java.
Okay
Ladies and gentlemen, we arrived at the hotel. Look at that on your right. That is the Betawi Hotel. The style of architecture is unique. It is the local style.
Wow, that is good.
Please sit in the lobby. I will do the check-in for you.
As the tourists got off the bus, I rushed to the lobby. I greeted the receptionist and showed them the rooming list and the voucher for my group.
"Good morning. I am Benny from Volcano Tours. We have booked ten rooms. Here is the rooming list and the voucher.
Volcano Tours or Ron White Tours?
Volcano Tours is the local agent for White Tours.
Okay Sir. We have prepared the rooms. We provided ten rooms for the guests plus one room for the tour director, Mr. Ron White.
Meet my friend, Mr. Ron White.
Hi, I am Ron.
Welcome to Betawi Hotel, sir.
Thank you
Please enjoy the welcome drink. This is an herbal drink from Indonesia.
I told the guest.
Minutes later, the receptionist gave me the keys. Then I helped Ron give the key to his guests.
Tomorrow I will be here at six. We will leave the hotel at seven thirty with the luggage. So please put your luggage in front of your rooms at 6:30. The boys will take them down here.
Okay, thank you, Benny.
Have a good rest. See you tomorrow.
See you, Benny. Take care
Botanical Garden
At five AM, the sky was still dark when I took the first train to the Betawi hotel from my house in the eastern suburb of Jakarta. It took me an hour to get from my house to the hotel. I was lucky that the train station is not far from the hotel. So I just walked there.
I was reading something on my cellphone when Ron appeared.
Good morning, Benny. How are you?
Good morning, Ron. I’m fine. How are you?
Very well. Thank you. Ben, how’s the plan today?
"We will visit the botanical garden in Bogor. It will take approximately ninety minutes to get there. We will spend
