Yvonne Marrs

Invernesian Yvonne Marrs (1982-present day) has loved writing for as long as she can remember, moving to the London area at the age of 19 to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Yvonne graduated from UHI (Inverness College) with an HND in Administration and Information Management, a set of skills she puts to good use to organise herself and her work - especially as she has her own publishing company, WTSMP Publications. Currently Yvonne has published several fictional series - the 'When The Sax Man Plays' series, the 'Football Crazy' series, the 'Aiden Lewis octet', 'Can't Buy Health' series and 'Undeserved'. Yvonne dreamt up the idea that formed the "When The Sax Man Plays" (WTSMP) series after falling in love with saxophone music, and being inspired by Leona Lewis' dream X Factor win. To throw an ordinary person in an ordinary job, with an extraordinary talent into superstardom is the story behind WTSMP. The central character, Jason Bottelli is such a person, although we soon discover he is far from ordinary! If you like your fiction easy going, entertaining, enthralling and heart-warming, you'll fall in love with the musical romance that is the WTSMP series. The ever popular "Football Crazy" series follows our central character, Aiden Lewis, as he rises through the football ranks. From club player to International sensation; through to his management career, leading England into the World Cup and then his brother's local team, the London Giants, from nowhere into the Premiership as the series progresses. Aiden's story continues with the 'Aiden Lewis octet', finishing with 'Undeserved'. There are standalone books as well as those in a series: 'Castiliano Vulgo' - a fictional work on 16th Century London life written using both Elizabethan English and Modern English. 'Inexorable' - a murder erotica written as part of the NaNoWriMo challenge in 2016. 'Putting the Visible into So Called Invisible Illnesses' - a work of 50 poems about living with invisible illnesses, as Yvonne does. 'Harbourtown Murder' - a murder mystery set in fictional Cornwall where a stray cat is the only witness.

The Undeserved Series - Yvonne Marrs

    Chapter 6

Easing him onto the bed what felt like hours later, Harry smiled when Nicole cuddled into Aiden properly. Hugging Aiden from the other side, he checked for what must have been the thousandth time that he truly was okay.

Drawing Nicole closer, Aiden agreed, murmuring against her. Nicole smiled, kissing him. She looked up at the gathering in the room and nodded: he was much better.

Should we kick our admirers out so you can rest? She half teased, rubbing her nose against Aiden's.

    Mmm... He mumbled.

Harry returned her smile beyond relieved that things weren't as bad as he had first feared, getting to his feet. We'll be here to keep an eye on you.

... fine... Aiden's voice was a whisper now.

Sleep, Ady. I'm right here. Nicole promised. Soothingly rubbing his chest, she watched Aiden harmlessly fall asleep in the next few minutes. Once he'd settled, they all left.

Charlotte and Mike had been looking after the twins, with Bobbie and Christian, while Harry and Ann were in with Aiden and Nicole. They both looked up when the pair came into the room.

How are they? Mike was first to ask.

They're okay. Harry drew a still rather distraught Ann into his arms.

Bobbie cuddled them from the side; but Christian stayed on the sofa, lost in his own world.

Charlotte nodded. I'll check on Nic.

    But... Mike frowned.

I won't be long. She said, moving quietly through the house.

Through the slightly open door in the bedroom, Charlotte announced her presence in the room.

    Char, Nicole whispered.

I'm here, Nic. She whispered back, going around the bed to Nicole's side. Are you okay?

Nicole nodded, kissing Aiden and letting go of him. He didn't stir. Shifting in the bed, he still did not react: Aiden was out like a light.

Bless him. Charlotte shook her head, seeing what Nicole had. He's exhausted, poor thing.

Tearfully Nicole nodded, pulling herself to the edge of the bed so that she and Charlotte could hug.

It's alright, Nic. Charlotte said in her ear. You were all alright.

Nicole shook her head, memories of the last time she'd been in a car accident haunting her. The result had been her paralysis.

I'm so proud of you. Charlotte told her. You coped so well. You stayed calm and in control. Nicole didn't even nod. Charlotte tightened her grip around her, having an idea what horrors were going through her mind. It's alright Nic, let it go. She encouraged her. You're safe. You and Aiden are alright.

I'll put the kettle on. Bobbie suggested, seeing her Dad nod as he comforted Ann.

She looked first at Christian, he was okay; checking in with Mike and the twins before she went to the kitchen, offering him a cup as well.

Mike smiled, agreed and thanked her. He was all too aware that he was an outsider here. Being with Aiden and Nicole he was comfortable, but having their family here too he wasn't so sure. But Charlotte had told him that life was complex... He sighed.

There was no sign of a return from Charlotte after Bobbie produced their mugs of tea, so Mike excused himself to check up on her. Having inadvertently triggered Nicole's memories from her accident some years ago when they had played on the tennis circuit together, he had an inkling this was why Charlotte was still with her.

Bless her, Charlotte was a Saint. He had no idea how wonderful she was. He must tell Nicole how much he appreciated her getting involved in getting them together. Without her, it may have never happened.

    ––––––––

Kissing Aiden's forehead before she sat up, Nicole took in Harry's stressed expression. With Aiden asleep, it was up to her to do the good parenting bit. She was shocked by the news of Bobbie's beating, but reassured him that she would soon heal.

    Harry nodded.

She can come over anytime she wants. Nicole had an idea then. Half the house is empty. It's a squash for all of you, but if Bobbie wants peace to study it would be perfect.

Harry smiled at her then. That's a good idea. Why didn't I think of that? His frown deepened.

You have a lot on your mind. Nicole gently patted his knee. Don't be so hard on yourself.

I'm not letting her go back. She can home study until the exams. Harry was indignant.

She can study here. Nicole agreed. It's only for another few weeks. She can get her notes emailed across, or Daniel can send them to her.

Getting used to the idea, Harry felt his relief grow, but it was short lived as guilt again swamped him. I feel like I've failed her.

No Harry, you haven't failed her. Not at all. Nicole beckoned him in for a hug. Things like this happen all the time. It's nobody's fault.

She's my little girl. Harry's voice cracked.

I know. Nicole comforted him. Even when she's our age, she'll still be your little girl.

He sniffed against her shoulder. Thank you. He half laughed. I'm getting sentimental daft in my old age. He joked.

And you think we aren't? She teased back, pleased when he smiled.

    ––––––––

It's far too nice to work here. Bobbie joked when she saw Nicole's study, and the beautiful view from the window. How do you manage it?

Nicole smiled at her, glad that Bobbie was feeling in the mood to tease. If it's too distracting, pick another room in the house. She spread her hands wide, looking at Harry. I'm sure your Dad can move the furniture around.

Harry rolled his eyes playfully. Ann had warned him earlier not to be too clingy: it was proving harder than he'd imagined. To think he had scoffed when she had spoken; she knew him so well.

There's no need. I'll be grand in here. Bobbie looked around the room, nodding to herself.

Nicole and Harry shared a smile.

And we're not far away if you need us. Nicole told her, seeing that Bobbie had eased into the padded office chair Harry had moved in no more than a few minutes ago. There are plenty of cushions and pillows to make it more comfortable for you. She indicated the sofa over at the other side of the room, piled plentifully for the occasion. The desk is so big Daniel will be able to set up his laptop too, so you can compare notes more easily. She continued.

Thank you. Bobbie got up and leant over Nicole to hug her. It's perfect, I can see why you like it. She felt a little emotional, for no logical reason.

Once she had let go of her, Harry hugged Bobbie, seeing her upset and worrying even more.

I'm okay Dad, I just... I'm so lucky to have all of this. She told him, before he could ask.

Nicole smiled, pulling aside a heavy curtain. And the piece de resistance - escape into the garden when you need fresh air.

Bobbie gasped. What a great idea!

    Harry too smiled.

And the sofa rolls out at the touch of a button for an afternoon doze. Nicole continued.

Bobbie again hugged her. You're so wonderful, thank you.

It's no problem. Nicole reassured her. I'll let you find your bearings. She said as Bobbie let go of her. I'll be with Aiden, come and find us when you're ready. She continued, a little unnecessarily.

Both Harry and Bobbie nodded, again admiring the view out of the window.

Aiden was sitting up amongst the pillows when the pair came into the room several minutes later. He smiled at both of them. Is it to your liking? He asked Bobbie, knowing from the grin on her face what the answer was going to be.

It's fantastic Papa, thank you. She gently hugged him.

It wasn't my idea, it was Nic's. He reminded her.

I know, I already thanked her. Bobbie replied, smiling at Nicole.

Twice. Nicole added, returning her smile.

I hope I won't disturb you. Bobbie frowned, sitting on the edge of the bed.

I'm sure you won't. Aiden smiled at her.

Nicole nodded. You can play music quite loudly in there and we won't hear much.

Really? Bobbie's eyes widened, and she followed Nicole back into the study for a demonstration, and then back to the master bedroom. That's a relief. I was worried I'd disturb you both.

No chance. Aiden reassured her. You will come to us if you need us. He frowned.

Yes Papa, I promise. The reply was instant. And you will get me if you need me. She turned it back on him.

Aiden looked shocked. Bobbie, you‘re here to work.

I will be working. She reassured him. But I have to know that you're okay.

I'll be fine. Aiden replied, hugging her when she came nearer again. Have you checked the Internet connection yet?

Bobbie shook her head. No. She frowned, and winced as her facial injuries protested.

Try it out in case we need to get someone in. Nicole told her, seeing Aiden was beginning to tire. We're going to curl up before lunch. She shuffled nearer him, kissing Aiden's cheek. Cuddling into him, she rested her head on his shoulder.

Grateful for her sixth sense, as always, Aiden turned to kiss the top of her head, sighing as he closed his eyes.

Of course. Bobbie left them in peace, and after a minute, Harry too drifted out.

    Chapter 7

Ady, are you sure you're okay? Nicole checked with him. She hated waking to him in the midst of an asthma attack.

Nodding, Aiden gave himself time to get his breath back. Fortunately, he'd been able to reach his medication himself and action it, and it had worked within the fourth dose. Pulling himself to sit upright, Nicole did the same, gently hugging him.

My poor Ady. She kissed his cheek, resting her head against his shoulder. You can't even sleep in peace.

Nodding his agreement, Aiden knew how unjust it all was. He sighed, stretching over for his phone. I want to talk to Lynn, and Jay. He said strongly, unsure of how Nicole would respond. He can't be good, if they're not here.

Quietly, Nicole nodded. She hadn't heard from either her sister- or brother-in-law for weeks, but had kept sending updates on Aiden's condition regardless.

Justin's phone was off, and Lynn's rang through to the answering machine: Aiden hung up without leaving a message, knowing Lynn would return the call when she could.

Seeing Nicole was watching him worriedly, he gave her a smile, huddling into her. My wonderful wife. He kissed her then.

Nicole laughed softly. What are you after? She teased.

You. For life. He replied, kissing her again.

Deal. Nicole smiled, kissing him back.

I love you Nicky, so much. He suddenly squeezed her tighter.

Not as much as I love you. Nicole whispered in his ear.

Gentle tapping on the door came then. Nic? It was Charlotte, no doubt checking up on them.

Come in, Char. Nicole replied, staying where she was in Aiden's hold. We're okay. She continued, as she heard Charlotte draw near.

Good. She could hear the smile in Charlotte's voice. Mike and I are going out for a while. Is there anything either of you need?

Nicole thought for a moment. No, I don't think so, thanks Char. Only then did she unearth herself. Looking at Charlotte, she saw Mike was with her: they were both smiling kindly at her.

Have you been okay? Charlotte now had her gaze on Aiden's pale face.

Aiden nodded. I'm fine, with my Nic.

Of course. She smiled as Aiden put his arms around Nicole again.

You've got me, honey. Nicole kissed his cheek, settling into him once more.

We'll give you peace, but text me if you think of anything. Charlotte nodded to herself, pleased that her sixth sense for trouble had been unfounded – this time.

We will. Nicole replied, happy to cuddle into her precious spouse and do nothing more.

She sighed when Aiden's phone rang no more than five minutes later. At a glance, she saw it was Lynn, returning the call. If it had been up to her, she wouldn't have answered. Aiden too sighed, pressing to answer, activating the speakerphone.

    Aiden?

    We're here, Lynn. He replied.

Are you okay? What's going on? Lynn asked.

I want to know what's going on with you. He replied.

Oh Aiden. Upset rose in Lynn's voice. Tell Nic I'm sorry I didn't answer her messages. Lynn swallowed hard. Jay's... We've only just got him out of the hospital.

What?! Both Aiden and Nicole spoke together.

He's much better now. Lynn sniffed. I've left him with James and Jon.

What happened? Nicole asked, sneaking a look at Aiden to judge his reaction. Seeing he was too upset to talk, she cuddled in closer to him.

The stent they put in collapsed, so it had to be rebuilt. Poor Jay was in such pain, we didn't know what it was at first. A minor procedure really. Lynn rambled on, unaware she had lost their attention.

It's okay Ady, it's okay. Nicole soothed, feeling the tension spreading through him.

As he began to wheeze, Nicole cut Lynn off, ending the call in order to focus on him. By the time Aiden's breathing had regulated, Lynn had rung back four times.

Rolling her eyes, Nicole had no choice but to call her back – but only once she was sure Aiden was up to it. That was very insensitive, Lynn. You could have warned us. You know how bad Aiden has been. She began the moment her sister-in-law answered.

I'm sorry Nic, you're right. Aides, are you okay?

Silently he nodded, feeling Nicole cuddle into him.

I really wanted to be there with you, Aides. Lynn continued. I'm sorry I couldn't.

It's okay. Nicole replied. We understand. She kissed Aiden's cheek. Don't we, honey?

    Aiden nodded again.

I'll get Jay to call you tomorrow, okay Aides? Once you've both had a rest. Lynn suggested. I wish we were nearer.

We know. Nicole replied. But you're not.

Lynn gasped at how blunt Nicole was being. Nic...

No, Lynn. The truth hurts sometimes. You can't wheedle out of it.

Aiden groaned, knowing there was about to be an almighty row between them.

Give Jay our love. Nicole finished, ending the call.

Aiden was as shocked as Lynn that Nicole had disconnected the call.

We have enough stress without dealing with her crap too. Nicole told him. I don't want her guilt tripping you.

    She wasn't.

She bloody was! Nicole spat. I've seen it before.

Nic, calm down. He hugged her tighter.

I can't help but be protective of you. Nicole whispered. She has no bloody idea.

    Wordlessly, Aiden shook his head.

    Chapter 8

Papa? Bobbie's voice reached him before she was in the room.

    Aiden groaned.

It's alright honey, I'll talk to her. Nicole was still talking in her reassuring voice.

He'd grown more than used to it, to be fair. The asthma attacks this morning had tired him, weakening his already wavering strength. An hour after the call to Lynn, he was starting to feel the effects of a Fibromyalgia flare up.

Nicole... Bless her, Nicole knew exactly what to do; he didn't even have to speak. Which was extremely helpful as his throat was sore, and the muscles in his chest and stomach throbbed every time he breathed in, never mind when he actually did anything.

As the throb shifted to his sciatic nerve and everything worsened, he heard Bobbie's sympathy.

She gently touched his arm. Poor Papa. I wish we could help you. She shook her head. I'll go home, I shouldn't be disturbing you.

Bobbie was here to work. By lunchtime, she had the notes from the morning classes awaiting attention in her inbox from Daniel. Every email finished in the same manner, with a smiley face and four kisses. It made her both smile and melt at the same time.

    No... Aiden whispered.

It's okay, Ady. Nicole soothed. You won't be disturbing us. We'd feel worse if you left.  Please don't. She appealed to Bobbie with her neediest expression.

Can I do anything? Bobbie asked after a few moment's pause.

No thank you Bobbie, we're fine. Aiden's had his painkillers, so we're riding the worst of it out. Nicole grimaced.

Poor Papa. Bobbie shook her head again, leaning over to very carefully kiss his forehead.

Only then did Aiden open his eyes. She could see then on a scale of one to ten, it was an eleven point seven.

I'll call Ann. She'll be able to help you. Bobbie wanted to sit on the edge of the bed beside him but stopped herself, knowing how much pain the simple movement would cause.

...no... Aiden's voice was barely above a whisper.

It's a good thought, Nicole said kindly, but not even Ann's magic can dampen this. We can only wait for it to pass. She kissed Aiden's cheek then. My poor Ady. I really wish we could help you, honey. She tried to swallow the rising lump in her throat.

You do help him, you're fantastic. Bobbie told her, smiling at her when Nicole's eyes met hers. We wouldn't ever leave Papa if we didn't have you.

Nicole gave her a watery smile. Returning her attention to her poorly spouse, she didn't like the increased pain in his face. Ady, oh honey, hang on. For a second, she panicked - then her brain kicked in. We'll put you on the oxygen, that helps you so much.

Kissing his head, she took the pro-offered mask from Bobbie, watching her turn it on correctly, and allowing her to join in Aiden's soothing. In between times, Nicole gave him doses from both inhalers when required.

Truly frightened, Bobbie called Ann against Aiden's wishes, relieved when Ann promised to come round after seeing her last patient. Rather cleverly, Ann had her read the stats on Aiden's wrist monitor, explaining that each number was average for him, reassuring them all that Aiden wasn't needing urgent help. Even Aiden himself nodded. He nodded again when Ann told him to rest.

Deeply relieved when twenty or so minutes later, Bobbie sent her a message saying that Aiden was now sleeping peacefully, Ann drew in a deep breath. She knew now what Harry meant about not wanting Bobbie to be there when... She couldn't bear to finish the thought.

Bobbie let Daniel in the side door of Nicole’s study so that she didn't make a noise getting to the front door to let him in. Burying her head in his chest as he hugged her, she could feel her previously stifled tears fall.

Before the last lesson he'd sent a message, getting the feeling that something was awry. Bobbie's reply came back reasonably quickly – she hadn't done anything yet, her Papa was too ill and she couldn't leave him.

She had taken well to his idea of coming over to help: in fact, far better than he'd originally thought. He was relieved to have her give out so many good signs after the hard time she’d endured recently.

Dropping a kiss on the top of her head, he gave her a gentle squeeze, recalling at the last second that her ribcage was still very bruised. Hey, he said again, don't cry. He'll be okay.

Bobbie shook her head sadly. I... I can't do anything to help him.

I'm sure that's not true. He replied kindly, waiting for her response. She looked up at him and he bent his neck to kiss her. You're a brilliant help. I'm sure that's what Nicole would say.

Tearfully, Bobbie shook her head again. I don't want to leave him. She whispered.

Oh Bob. He squeezed her then. I understand. He hesitated. Should I... His words dried up. I shouldn't be here. He tried again. Disturbing you.

No. Her grip around him tightened. Don't go, please. I wanted you here.

You did? Daniel's eyebrows shot up.

She almost laughed at his surprise. Of course. I've missed you. The blush spread like wildfire across her face and neck at the admission. To cover it, she hugged him tighter again.

I've missed you like mad. He confessed, glad that she couldn't see his face.

    ––––––––

Aiden was on the edge of the bed, his feet on the floor, leaning against Nicole. The effort of trying to get to his feet had completely exhausted him. His breaths were caught in his chest painfully.

    Easy Ady, easy. Nicole soothed.

She could curse his stubborn streak at times, and this was one of those times. Just about able to reach the oxygen mask from there, reassuring him as she slipped it over his nose and mouth.

You'll be okay honey, I've got you. Nicole kissed the top of his head, one arm still around him.

    Aiden? Ann appeared beside them.

Nicole jumped, having not heard her enter the room. She nodded at Ann's apology.

Ann frowned. What are you doing up?

He didn't have the breath to speak.

You need to be resting. Ann tutted, shaking her head. I'll help you lie down again.

    Audibly, he moaned.

I know honey, it's okay. Nicole knew what the moan meant. I'm sure Ann will step out of the room while we use the bottle.

Ann's eyes widened. Aiden Lewis, you are unbelievable! She shook her head, folding her arms across her chest.

Don't. Nicole said warningly, feeling a lecture coming. She kissed Aiden's head again, as if to tell him that she would explain on his behalf. To be fair, he did feel a lot better ten minutes ago. Didn't you, honey?

Weakly, Aiden nodded. He hated the humiliation of the urinal bottle: out of all the procedures and things he had to endure, that - for some reason - was the worst.

If I help you sit back against the pillows, will that be okay? Ann changed tact, gently placing her hand on Aiden's shoulder.

    Again, he nodded.

I'll then see how Bobbie is getting on.

Nicole glanced up at her. Thank you. She said softly.

Tell me when you are ready. Ann said softly. I'm all yours, for however long you want me to stay.

That's very kind of you, Ann. Nicole smiled at her, relieved that Aiden's breathing had calmed significantly in the last few minutes. How do you feel, honey? She was rubbing his back with her free hand, her other arm still around him, anchoring him.

Terrible, actually. He wished he could put it into words. There were no suitable words in the English language powerful enough to describe how he felt.

Aiden? Ann too was worried when he didn't reply.

I'm going to leave the oxygen on for a while, honey. Nicole continued. You're so much better with it at the moment. She kissed his bowed head. My poor Ady.

Finding his voice took time. ... Nic...

I know, Ady. She kissed him again. Let Ann help you get comfortable.

He nodded, knowing the movement was going to hurt - and from there, the pain was going to interfere with his breathing. It was a vicious circle.

Closing his eyes against the pounding of pain waves flooding through him, he heard Ann leave once he was able to take calmer, deeper breaths. Just the effort of moving his arms to hold the bottle hurt like hell.

How had he expected to be able to walk to the bathroom?! He’d even been stupid enough to refuse a wheelchair, instead protesting that the walking frame was enough to aid his progress through the house.

    Reality hit home - hard.

Nicole was watching him intently, not surprised to see tears running down his pale cheeks in the next moment. Oh Aiden. My poor, poor Aiden. She cuddled into him as close as she could.

Ann hugged Bobbie tightly, reassuring her that Aiden felt better since she had arrived. She reassured her that it was a flare, and although it was bad, it couldn't worsen.

Bobbie nodded, sniffing against her. I can't leave him.

Ann looked across at Daniel, who shrugged. Your poor Papa is such a fighter. It's extremely difficult for us to stand by and watch. I wish we could help him. She sighed wistfully.

The silence between them was broken by the sound of Bobbie's phone ringing. Glancing at it, she saw it was her Dad. Thus, it would be his now usual 'when are you coming home' call. She sighed too.

Dad, I can't come home yet. She was still tearful.

What? Why? What's wrong? They all heard the panic in Harry's voice when he saw her upset.

Papa is so bad, I can't leave him. I haven't been able to do any work. Bobbie sniffed back more tears.

Oh God! Harry moaned. That was a double edged sword.

Ann is here. She can't do much, but she's helping us. Bobbie gave her a small smile.

She is? Harry frowned. Can I talk to her, please?

Ann recognised the forced calm in his voice. He'll be fine. He's been in a huge flare today. You know how the pain affects his chest. She wandered away from the teenagers by the window. Yes Harry, he's okay. No, we don't need you to come over. Everything is okay. Ann held back her sigh. Okay, see you soon.

    And then she hung up.

    Chapter 9

Ady, it's okay honey, we're right here. Nicole spoke softly, running her fingers through his hair.

It sounded like Nicole was testing him: slowly, he opened one eye. They were both lying down, and they were still at home. Well, that was a relief!

Dad? The sound of Sadie's voice on their opposite side made him open the other eye, and turn his head towards her. Easy. Sadie squeezed his hand, giving him a small smile when his eyes met hers. You must be feeling a lot better now. She continued.

Aiden found himself nodding. He paused to perform the now usual system check, and to his surprise, he did feel better.

Ann called earlier, the boys are much better today too. Sadie was testing him now.

You might not remember, honey. Nicole kissed his cheek, bringing his attention back to her. The twins have chicken pox. Ann has been banned from work. Christian started to develop symptoms yesterday, poor soul. She paused, watching Aiden's eyes widen in horror. Bobbie had it when she was very young, so she's immune. She's helping Ann and Harry.

Slowly Aiden nodded, feeling tired out by all this information.

My poor Ady, you're exhausted. Nicole kissed him again. I told Sadie there was no need for her to come down to see us, but I couldn't stop her.

The two women shared a smile.

No prizes for guessing where I get my stubbornness. Sadie teased. Can we get you anything Dad, before you go back to sleep? She asked him, watching Aiden close his eyes again.

He shook his head, feeling then that each of them had one of his hands in theirs. It truly was fantastic to be so loved and so well looked after... Soon, he drifted off again.

The more he came round, the worse his chest felt. Letting out a pained groan, he was startled when Sadie gently hugged him.

Dad, it's okay. Take your time. She told him.

Trying to take a deeper breath, his chest grated. Pain shot through him before he could do anything.

What was that? It was Sadie's turn to be startled. She immediately let go of him and sat up. Dad?

Where was Nicole? He needed her: she would know what to do; she would have read his mind by now and be easing him into his medication. His next breath was more of a gasp.

Dad, hang on, it's alright. Sadie looked around, grappling with the mask and the controls on the oxygen tank. Giving him the mask, she was confused when he shook his head. What do you need, your spray or your inhaler?

Managing to nod, Aiden closed his eyes again. His chest was tightening like a vice, his strength sapping.

Inhaler first. Sadie told him, her voice now calm. You're getting wheezy.

He had no energy to respond.

It's alright Dad, I'll call Nicole, hang on.

Sadie dialled her phone, activating the speaker. Relaying what had happened, she took direction to help him, while Nicole returned from the kitchen - talking soothingly to him all the time. The journey was barely three minutes, but she was all too aware it felt like an eternity to her poorly spouse.

It's okay honey, it's okay. Nicole kept repeating as he took his medication with Sadie's help, relieved when he began to feel slightly better and less panicked.

Moaning for her when she was near, he was consumed with relief when Nicole leant over him. She was whispering in his ear; all he knew was that he never wanted her to go away again.

Honey, it's okay. I'm here. I'm sorry I wasn't here when you woke up.

He woke up like this. Worry had crept back into Sadie's voice. See, this is why I wanted to come, I knew you needed me.

Aiden weakly gave her hand a squeeze, groaning as Nicole's phone rang. Mustering up the strength to speak, effectively he was drowned out. The tone was the one associated with Charlotte's number.

Ady, that's Char. I should answer her. Nicole kissed the side of his head, going to pull away, but unable to as his grip around her tightened. Aiden, please. Nicole didn't like it when she was pinned down, too many horrors spun through her mind. Let me go. Her voice lowered, but it did the trick: Aiden let go of her.

Sitting upright, Nicole saw the upset in his face, and tried to shake off her own. He hadn't meant to trigger her anxieties. Her phone rang off: for a few seconds, she stayed exactly where she was. As the tears cascaded down his face, she let hers mingle with his, leaning over him once more.

I'm sorry honey, I didn't mean to upset you. She told him. I know you'd never hurt me. She said it more to herself than anything else.

Confusion was etched into his face. What was Nicole talking about? She was the key to his recovery, had she forgotten? He could feel himself getting even more worked up.

My poor Ady, I'm sorry honey. She kissed him.

    Sadie too was hugging them.

While it was meant to be comforting, it further speeded the suffocating feeling. And with that, the panic; and from there, the anxiety pain started up; after that, it was only a matter of time before his angina flared up... He groaned.

Aiden? Nicole sat up, looking into his face and reading what he wasn't saying. It's okay honey, Sadie has your spray, you'll be alright. She took it from Sadie, pulling off the cap and shaking it. I'll do it for you, just try to relax.

Urgh. He would if he could.

It's okay Dad, you're alright. Sadie joined the reassurance.

If only he was... Those horrid short snatches of breath were frightening for all of them.

Inhaler too, honey. Nicole swapped them over in her hand. You're alright. Silently, she cursed as her phone rang again - again the ringtone dictated it was Charlotte.

She must know. Sadie shook her head, relieved to see that one dose of the spray had worked; but worried that Aiden was still terribly wheezy.

We'll have the oxygen on again, and I'll call Charlotte back. Nicole told him, the mask already in her grasp. Take it easy, honey. Big, deep breaths. We know you don't feel well.

We're not going to let anything happen to you Dad, we've got you. Sadie agreed, squeezing his nearest hand reassuringly.

Hmm... If only they could keep that promise, but they all knew it wasn't that simple any more. He moaned softly as Nicole hauled herself into bed beside him.

Sshh. It's okay, honey. I'm here. Nicole kissed him, tapping out a quick message to Charlotte virtually without looking and sending it. Hold on honey, you'll be feeling a lot better soon. She promised.

The hot, sweating, sickness was starting up now: Aiden groaned. Why would the torment never stop?

It's alright Ady, sshh. Save your energy, honey. Nicole was still reassuring him, gently rubbing his chest, her head on his shoulder. I've got you, Ady.

Several minutes later, they could both feel his body shaking. He groaned, keeping his eyes shut.

After checking his levels on his wrist monitor, Nicole's suspicions were confirmed - his blood sugar had dropped. Directing Sadie to the essentials ensured she stayed near Aiden the whole time, not wanting to leave him even for a moment.

Let's try the Glycogen first, that usually works. But we're prepared if you need more, honey.

It'll soon be working. Sadie too was using her reassuring, soothing voice. You poor thing. She retook his hand in hers, sitting on the edge of the bed now, keeping close to him. Only letting go of him to prepare another syringe as bade, she soon took her place beside him again.

Aiden? Charlotte's voice appeared before she did. Sadie moved so that she could come in closer. Oh Aiden, you poor soul. Charlotte carefully leant over him, very carefully kissing his head. Mike?

    Yes? He replied instantly.

Can you put the kettle on for us please? A sweet tea will help Aiden too.

Sure. Won't be long. He gave Sadie a smile when she looked at him, thanking him softly.

Did he respond to the Glycogen? Charlotte questioned Nicole.

Not properly. Nicole shook her head. But the insulin combination worked. Didn't it, honey?

    Mmm. Aiden murmured.

Oh Aiden. Charlotte shook her head, withdrawing from him to allow Sadie to take her place. She could see in a glance that Nicole's calm wasn't false, and that reassured her.

Cuddled in close to him, Nicole followed Aiden's breathing begin to calm further: another good sign. Letting her breath out slowly, unaware that she had been holding it, she glanced up. Charlotte met her eye and they exchanged a slight smile. Charlotte could only hear murmured answers to Nicole's and Sadie's questions, not close enough to hear what Aiden said clearly.

That's okay honey, let's give it a go. Nicole advised, taking the mask off while Sadie turned off the cylinder.

Do you still feel okay? Sadie checked when she turned back to him.

    Aiden nodded.

Good. Sadie's smile was broad: Nicole thought that hers and Charlotte's matched.

    Nic,

Yes honey, I'm here. She kissed him, shuffling even nearer him now the apparatus was out of the way. We're going to rest now.

Mmm hmm. He breathed into her neck.

Ady, are you okay? Nicole stroked his pale cheek, feeling him nod.

    ... tired... He whispered.

That's alright honey, you have a sleep. We'll make you another tea when you wake up.

    Mmm...

Nuzzled into his beloved Nicole, safe and warm and loved, with the pain only in the background and his chest much looser, it wasn't long before Aiden was harmlessly asleep.

    Chapter 10

Mmm... Aiden stirred, the faint music he could hear getting through to his subconscious.

Nicole too stirred, and yawned. It took her a while to realise that the sound was coming from Bobbie's study. Their afternoon catnap had been a long one today, Nicole realised as the time ticked over to quarter to five.

She had told Bobbie that no music would interrupt them; but it seemed like it was at a higher volume than its usual preset. Still, each to their own. Turning onto her side, she saw Aiden too was awake. Checking his welfare first, she cuddled into him when he gave her positive answers.

My beautiful Nicky. Aiden murmured into her hair, kissing the top of her head.

My handsome husband. She kissed his chest, wrapping her arms around him properly. Stretching up, she could just about reach to rub her nose against his.

Aiden laughed at the gesture, returning it to make her too laugh. I feel like getting up. He said a few minutes into their comfortable silence.

Inwardly, Nicole flinched. She had planned for this to happen only with both Harry and Ann in attendance to support him, and it was her belief that Ann felt the same.

Nic, what's wrong? He pulled away sensing there was something she wasn't saying.

I know you want to, but I would prefer if you would wait for Harry to be here to help you. Nicole chose her words carefully. I can't pick you up off the floor.

Aiden nodded, knowing there was something unspoken in her mind. Okay, I'll wait.

Daniel's fingertips were lightly tracing the hairs on Bobbie’s arm, the one stretched above them as they both lay on the pull-out sofa. It gave her goosebumps, but in a good way.

Bobbie smiled at him when he caught her eye, and moved in for a kiss. Then, she rolled over, on top of him, playfully. Such a kind, gentle man... She was sure lovemaking with him would be everything she had dreamt of. Half fiddling with the fly on his trousers, she spoke the sentence in her head aloud.

Daniel's eyes widened. Bobbie, are you... His sentence dried up; the stirrings in his nether regions her touch was causing intensified.

In one movement, she had his jeans undone, and her hand was inside the material. In mixed shock and pleasure, he let her do what she wanted. Her kisses and caresses were in time with the music, and Daniel knew he could very quickly lose his self control.

    You’re fantastic, Dan.

Nobody had ever called him that, he hadn't let them; but with Bobbie, it felt right. A lot of things felt right with Bobbie, he had to admit.

So wonderful, kind, and caring. She continued.

I love you, Bobbie. He replied.

In shock, she let go of him. Say that again.

He smiled at her. I've loved you since I first saw you.

    Bobbie looked stunned. You have?

Yes. Daniel took her hands in his then, pulling her down to his level, but gently. Bobbie Leigh Lewis, I love you. His smile widened. How does Bobbie Leigh Gordon sound?

Bobbie's jaw dropped open. Immediately, Daniel knew he had come on too strong. He’d been wrong to push the confession on her.

Seeing his expression softened her somewhat. You are amazing. She changed tact. But you've forgotten I'm a Jacobsen-Lewis. So it would be Jacobsen-Lewis Gordon.

It was Daniel's turn to be so shocked his mouth fell open.

I want to make love with you. She blushed at her own words.

    Daniel nodded. But not here.

Bobbie frowned. Why not? It would never happen at our house. She rolled her eyes.

Maybe not. Daniel hesitated. How do you feel about going to my place?

Bobbie shrugged. I hadn't thought about it. She giggled at the thought that crossed her mind. Would it be like in the films, where we can't manage to make it to the house and stop by the beach?

Daniel wrinkled his nose. I don't think so. I can't stand sand between my toes, never mind anywhere else!

Bobbie laughed loudly. Why not here, now? She kissed him again. It feels right. She whispered in his ear, her breath on his neck sending shivers down his spine.

What if we are disturbed? Daniel tried.

We won't be disturbed. We'll be quick. She giggled again.

I don't want it to be quick. Daniel frowned. Our first time should be special.

    Like what? Bobbie's eyebrows raised.

By candlelight, after a perfect evening together. He cuddled into her.

You're such a girl. Bobbie teased, playfully slapping him.

Ah, but I'm your girl. He teased her back.

Giving him a mischievous grin, Bobbie got to her feet, firstly pulling a chair over the door so they wouldn't be disturbed. At the desk, she clicked on a few commands, and virtual candles flickered on the screen.

Daniel laughed softly, cuddling her when she lay down again. Kissing and fondling, they explored each other's body over their clothes. Slowly, they took each other's clothes off, pulling the blanket over the nakedness.

On their sides, face to face, Bobbie could feel his excitement increase by the second, her own already bounds ahead. With their pelvic areas touching, and rubbing against each other, they were soon going to be joined.

    Bobbie, I don't...

That's okay. She kissed his words and worried thoughts away. I'm on the pill. It's fine. She hesitated. Unless...

    Daniel frowned. Unless what?

Her face flamed at the thought of what she was about to ask him. You don't... You... Have you...

He liked the sweet way that she couldn't get the words out. No. You're my first.

A broad grin broke across Bobbie's face. You’re my first. My perfect first. She whispered. A thought occurred to
