When a mysterious, antlered creature appears, it could be the hope Naukan needs, even if that hope is in something as far-fetched as magic. Could this be Lena's chance to save the people of her planet, learn more about Naukan's sister planet, Kuozlon, and possibly process the romantic feelings she has towards her best friend and fellow survivor?

The Moon Witch’s Brew

The day Kuozlon appeared in the skies of Naukan, the illness began.
The sister planets shared a sliver of the same trajectory. Once every thousand years, the two planets grew close. The moon, which followed Kuozlon, pulled into Naukan’s orbit. The sickness became known as Kuo, and for the first time in centuries, the people of Naukan could not find a cure as they plunged into insanity and blindness.
The room was dark and hot. A man on a cot sobbed uncontrollably; cloth covered his face. Lena stood at a sink, scrubbing a pot with water she fetched earlier in the day and heated. The autowasher had long since stopped functioning. Her brow furrowed and worry lines deepened around her eyes. She scrubbed the pot harder, and the sharp edge cut into her hand.
Just my luck,
she mumbled. Not wanting to waste the medpack she had remaining, she poured heated water over the wound.
Lena finished scrubbing the pot and went to the man lying down. She felt his forehead and clicked her tongue. His health gauge on his wrist showed his heart rate was accelerated, and his temperature read dangerously high. The same as always.
Lena?
the man said, attempting to turn towards her. Is that you? Or is it you, Jessi?
Lena patted his arm, the way she’d done for many before
