Lost & Found - Allegra Johnson

    Chapter 1.

    ––––––––

Hannah had forgotten how to walk. There was no other explanation for it. Her legs worked fine only minutes ago when she walked away from the lady selling scones, but now, she was stuck. Had her legs actually grown roots? That’s what her primary teacher said would happen if she kept standing in one spot. The tent was right there, mere feet away, with its three tan canvas walls and pitched roof. The crystals hanging from the entrance seemed to dance in the breeze sparkling in the sunlight. Hannah couldn’t make out any details inside the tent, as a set of three-panel screens hid most of the interior from the view of passersby. For reasons she couldn’t explain, she was drawn to this faire. There was an overwhelming urge to be here, a feeling she would finally be at peace, that she would gain an understanding. All of that was waiting for her, she could almost touch it, she just had to move.

This was nonsense, she hadn’t forgotten how to walk and she was going to prove it right now. She was going to walk up to the tent and get her cards read, or tea leaves ... or whatever fortune tellers did. She wasn’t quite sure what was supposed to happen, but Hannah was going to get the answers that had been plaguing her all her life. She had put it off long enough, the faire would be closing soon, she had to get that reading now. And she would, as soon as she remembered how to walk.

Hannah took a few steps and paused, her stomach flipped, threatening to revolt the meat pie she ate earlier, she pushed herself to keep moving on shaky legs, stopping just inches before the tent. She was stuck, again, paralyzed in ... fear? But what was she scared of? The unknown? This is what she came here for, to have her fortune told and possibly get some answers. There was nothing to fear. She had to do this. She reached up to her necklace, lightly caressing the golden ring attached, it gave her the strength to take the final steps into the tent where a thin older woman greeted her with a warm smile. Hannah returned the smile with one of her own and glanced around the small tent. A cozy atmosphere welcomed her. There was a small round table with a set of stools on one side and a high table on the other side. The table was littered with small jars, ceramic canisters and of all things, an electric tea kettle. Hannah wondered how it would work without electricity.

Come in, sit down. I’ve been waiting for you, my dear Hannah.

How do you know my name? Hannah asked as she walked to the stool at the table the woman motioned to.

Oh, I know a lot of things about you. Now sit, I’ll make us some tea and we’ll see what else I can learn about you. That’s right, dear, sit down. I’ll be just a minute now.

Hannah sat gingerly on the stool the woman had indicated. Her heart pounded in her ears, her hands were shaking, and her stomach gurgled again. Maybe this was a bad idea.

What’s— Hannah’s voice cracked and she coughed to clear her throat, What’s your name? How do you know my name and that I was coming? You said you were waiting for me.

The woman turned to face Hannah with two teacups in her hands. "I
