Jackie wanted to have a murder mystery dinner at her home in two weeks on Friday night. She invited her friends, most of her friends live nearby, so they were sure to come. Her sisters live with her, they want to help her create the dinner theater. They were sitting at the dining room table to discuss it. Jackie told her family.

I have a card for each person invited to the dinner, it will be on the table with their name on it. Rose asked.

This is going to be wonderful, now who is going to be killed?

Let’s invite my sister, Cindy cried loudly. We can kill her, nobody will miss her!

Er mom, Susan told mom. You know we are not really killing people, this is make-believe!

Fiddle-sticks, Mom said. No one said that!

I was thinking, Jackie smiled. Our sheriff would enjoy solving the murders, but I want to kill him last to confuse everyone.

Good, Cindy smiled. You’re really going to kill him, right?

Er, Susan asked. Jackie you sound like your serious, tell me you’re not?

It will cook his goose, I smiled. To act like he is dead while everyone solves the murder. Cindy smiled.

Oh emotional pain, Cindy smiled. I love it, that’s my daughter!

See mom, Rose told Cindy. We are not killing anyone!

We need a full house, I added. So it will not be easy to solve the murders."

Jackie, we have a full house all the time. Susan frowned as she added. Are they all going to be in on this?

I passed out a list to each of my sisters and Cindy that outlined ways the guest or the residents could be killed.

I don’t think poison should be on the list, Rose added as she looked at the list. Our guest would need to bring their own poison to do the dirty deed.

Jackie set a tray on the table. It was full of small bottles labeled as poison.

It is all make-believe silly. I laughed. This way we can provide the murder weapons. Look, I got them labeled with different poison labels, clever huh?

Hey, Cindy asked. Is my sister invited, which bottle is for her?

Look I even put the symptoms of poison on the label, I ignored her. I had to do some research!

Mom, Rose told her mom. Will you please look at the guest list Jackie gave us. You might see that your sister is invited. Mom asked.

Well, Mom asked. Did she give us an RSVP? Susan rolled her eyes.

Where is your mind tonight, Susan asked. There is an RSVP behind her name. Cindy looked hard at it before she giggled.

We can work on this tomorrow. I said. Susan it is time to put our mom to bed. Susan was sad as she stood up.

Come on mom, it is your bedtime. Susan took mom’s hand to lead her upstairs. Rose said.

I move the motion that we need to give mom multivitamins, Rose said. The powerful kind!"

I second that motion, I said. I will put in on my shopping list.

We still have 2 weeks before the big event, Rose replied. Did you talk to Emily about what she will cook for dinner?

Emily wants to serve roast beef, Jackie smiled. It takes a little while, but it is simple. Everyone will love it. I added.

We need to feed the people before we kill them.

Rose giggled. Now I am thinking like mom.

I screamed. James, you better not be pulling on our strings. I want a happy cheerful night, and leave us alone in the meantime. We don’t need your malice!

James, the house spirit showed up semi-transparent. He was wearing a hat and a suit and looking like a gentleman holding a riding stick as if I pulled him away from something important.

You accused me unfairly, malice indeed, I would not stoop to malice, I am a gentleman.

Jackie leaned back and clapped her hands, Rose clapped too.

I give that one a 10, I said. Bravo James!

James, Rose said. That was a solid performance.

Susan hurried down to ask. What did I miss?

Jackie accused James of using malice on us. Rose told her. He showed up wearing a fancy hat holding a riding stick acting like a gentleman as he told us that he would never stoop to malice.

Susan giggled before she said. That is a good one James!

James rolled his eyes before he disappeared.

We voted to get mom powerful multi-vitamins, Rose said. She is loopy.

Yeah she is, Susan agreed with a smile. But she is funny!

Jackie, Susan asked. Are we going to tell everybody what weapons are available? That way they can think about how to kill someone.

You are overthinking this. I told her. I already know who is going to die, and how. Our guest has to figure out who the killer is and how it was done.

People, Rose added. We don’t need people killing each other for the fun of it.

Cindy flew down like a spirit as she yelled.

That was what we did in the good old days, it was fun!

Rose accused Susan. I don’t think you made sure mom was asleep before you came back?

    Susan frowned. So sue me.

Emily, Susan called. Bring mom a hot toddy.

Emily, the cook, and housekeeper love to serve the family. She brought out a hot toddy for Cindy.

Emily asked. Does anyone else want a nightcap?

We all wanted one. Emily joined us with a hot toddy.

Susan told her. We were talking about the dinner theater with the murder mystery night.

That will be a blast, Emily nodded. Col. Mustard in the kitchen with a knife.

Well, Mom said.I rather it would be Mildred in the drawing-room with a knitting needle."

Mom, I reminded her. That will not be in the script mom, so forget about it.

James showed up to yell. Ahhh, I know it will not be me!

Guess what James, Rose yelled. James in the dining room with a cattle electric prod in his heart.

Very funny Rose darling, James rolled his eyes dramtically. I will give you a black star for that. Kayla walked in with Julie,

Julie asked. Are you guys playing Clue?

No, James said dramatically. They are assassinating my character, no mercy for me.

You don’t need it, Mom told him as she pointed a boney finger at him. You’re a cad! James disappeared.

Julie, Rose told her. We were making fun of James who was acting like a gentleman as he put on airs of superiority."

Julie agreed. That sounds like him, hey we heard about your murder mystery dinner. Is Kayla and I invited?

You are now, I handed them a large card each as I said. Everyone is invited. It will be a ball!

The two friends left to spread the word. Soon the dining room was full of people who wanted their invite. Charlene and her daughter, Carmen, showed up wearing beautiful white dresses looking like a real queen and princess. Shelia and Barbara came with Gloria to chat with Jackie.

Cindy grabbed a broom to fly around running into people.

Susan, Rose told her. Please put mom to bed, and stay with her this time, we are all going to sleep soon.

Yes, sister dearest. Susan frowned. I am on my way.

She led mom away, mom always listens and complies with Susan. Jackie walked up after them, everyone left at her hint. The next day was foggy, winter was slowly creeping in. Jackie was surprised by the sheriff, who asked.

Hey, I heard about your murder mystery dinner, am I invited?

I had a stack of large cards on my desk. I was looking at them when Emily brought coffee and two donuts for Doug, she liked him. He was sipping the coffee with one donut left as I said.

Here you are sheriff, it will be on the 1st of next month. I was hoping you would be there to solve the murders.

He smiled. Damn right, I will be there, I wouldn’t miss for all the tea in China.

He added. I was never promoted to detective, this will be awesome fun.

I added. I hoped you would be kind to be one of the victims to let someone else solve that murder.

Doug smiled. This is all make-believe right Jackie?

Absolutely Doug. I smiled. I would be in hot water if anyone got killed during my murder mystery dinner. Especially the sheriff, can you imagine the witch hunt that would be.

Doug laughed like a boy who loves to torment girls.

Damn right, you would be strung up by your big toes as they build a fire under you.

I got the chills, I almost canceled the dinner. I saw my hair catching fire spreading to my clothes and then my skin. When Doug left I insisted on my family gathering around the large pentagram in my bedroom. I told them.

We need to make sure no one is going to kill one of our guests, especially the sheriff. Everyone agreed.

Soon they were chanting with no results. I scratched my neck thinking we missed something. I told them.

We will chant again, but if we find nothing, we need to do this every day until the murder mystery night. Something is going to go wrong, I can feel it. I want to know who is going to do it.

We tried seeing the problem from different viewpoints as we shifted from one person to another person until we covered everyone who was invited. Then we tried people who were not invited. One thing was very clear after all of that work. We were sure someone was going to really die.

I cried. I know who is going to do it. It is that nutty old bat that fought me over her grandson. She will kill the sheriff to pin it on me somehow. My sister Rose said.

We can do a spell to block her from being here. We can also block her from looking like someone else.

Not good enough, I said. We have to invite her. We have to keep our enemies close to us. However, we can put her to sleep just before the dinner theater starts.

Rose smiled. Yes, that way we can keep a watch on her.

Mom had a lovely idea. Why don’t we frame her as a last resort, we don’t want our family framed as a murderer.

Rose smiled. "You mean we keep her as a scapegoat to be framed
