As we were in the middle of playing, Daddy came out of the house, and stumbled over the table of presents. Everyone turned around to see what all of the commotion was. I ran to Daddy to see if he was okay.

Are you alright? I asked him, afraid that he was really sick. He didn’t look very good, and had trouble standing back up.

Jennifer. You look so pretty. Why was my Daddy calling me Jennifer? That was my Mommy’s name. As I got closer, I could smell the alcohol on my Daddy. His breath and clothes and everything reeked of it.

Come on Jimmy. Let’s go inside. Uncle Zack tried to get Daddy inside, so he could lie down. Aunt Sarah got everyone playing and having fun again, but I was still worried about Daddy.

I followed Daddy and my Uncle into the house to make sure Daddy would be okay. I know it hurts to not have Jennifer here anymore, my uncle Zack was telling Daddy. You have to be here for Ruthie and Cameron, though. They need you.

They don’t need me! Daddy yelled angrily back at Uncle Zack.

Yes they do, Zack lectured, Cameron needs you to be a father to him.

He’s not even my son! What did Daddy mean that Cam wasn’t his son?

He is your brother though, Uncle Zack replied. I left before they said anymore.

How could Cam not be Daddy’s son if we were twins? Does that mean I’m not Daddy’s daughter?

    Prologue

We made it home safely and Sarah began to settle in. It took a while, but she eventually found her groove and even decided to go to school to become a chef. Of course, she spent a lot of time with Ms. Barker, who taught her many things about the culinary arts and who I think became like a second Mom to her.

Over the next few months, Jimmy was released and able to come back home. Since he was a minor when father died, his record would be sealed. He had would have to go to summer school, but Mr. Greene allowed him to walk with our class at Graduation. We had a big party and I started to feel like things were slowly being rebuilt.

Even mother was having more and more good days. The doctors said that she might be able to come home soon. She would still need a nurse, but she could at least be with the family twenty-four hours a day.

Julia and I were doing better than ever, and I was even thinking about popping the question. What do you guys think? I asked Zack and Sarah.

I think you should do it, replied Sarah, excitedly.

I don’t know how you can think of being tied down, Zack joked. You won’t see me getting married anytime soon, he continued.

You can’t even get married, I joked. I like the idea of settling down and maybe even starting a family. When you’ve had as much instability as I have had, being tied down sounds great.

Just be sure she’s the right girl, warned Zack.

What? You don’t like Jennifer? I asked with concern.

    "No, I didn’t
