    Chapter 1:

They parked in his wife’s staff spot just outside of White Crest Hospital and Asylum. As the sedan came to a stop, Larry resisted the urge to put his hands on the glass and look up at the imposing walls.

White Crest Hospital existed as something of an anachronism. The facility was more than a century old. In spite of the renovations and meaningful wealth that flowed through this hospital, it still intimidated him even though his wife had a tremendous amount of power here. Maybe it was the cameras that constantly swiveled and shifted as they scanned for any errant patients. Maybe it was seeing the guard up ahead, a tall man with broad shoulders and a stun gun on his waist. Or maybe it was the simple knowledge that so many of the patients at White Crest didn’t want to be there. They were admitted because their family, friends, or the state decided they needed treatment. Or maybe he simply got nervous because he was about to step into his wife’s domain.

Larry glanced over at Katrina, the warden for White Crest. She had her hair tied back into a severe bun, and her black skirt and dark top gave her a sense of menacing authority. Whenever she looked out at the world, her gaze made one thing clear: she expected to be obeyed.

In this facility, the patients, orderlies, nurses, and doctors all understood who was in charge: Katrina.

What you think she’s going to be like? Larry asked as he stifled some of the nervous energy running through his body. When they first had his stepsister, Mary, admitted to White Crest, he had to ask about potential conflict of interest. Seriously, could Katrina have Mary there as one of the patients when she was in charge?

Katrina had smiled at him and told him it would be okay.

But now he got out, and she followed. Katrina quickly stepped ahead, which was easier for her considering she was five inches taller than her husband with his slight, lithe frame. While so many men could be proud of their rounded pectorals, broad shoulders, and thick biceps, Larry seemed somehow diminutive, especially in comparison to his wife.

Katrina stepped forward, her heels clicking against the concrete as they walked toward the staff entrance. She pulled out a metal key along with a plastic card.

Before they arrived, she glanced down at Larry. He hated when he had to turn his head up to see his wife’s expression; it always made him feel like a child, like he couldn’t possibly be in control or compete with her.

I think she’s going to be fine, she said.

I still can’t believe it. I mean, she has always seemed so strong.

The patients here at White Crest aren’t weak, Katrina said, quickly correcting her husband. They just need help. Usually, it’s a question of perspective and framing.

Larry didn’t really understand what that meant, but he nodded along anyway.

At the staff entrance, she swiped her card, inserted the key, and the door opened after three audible clicks.

Another shiver ran down Larry’s back. Three clicks meant three locks. The employees of White Crest were serious about security.

The warden glanced back down at her husband, and she easily guessed his thoughts. She had an unnerving way of figuring out exactly what he was thinking, We have never lost a patient.

You mean no one has ever escaped?

Never, she said. Somehow, he didn’t find this reassuring.

But then Larry, just needed to remember that they were here to visit his stepsister and make sure she was okay.

    Mary.

They quickly passed through the employee areas. They walked by a file room, a break area, and a space filled with lockers. Moments later, they headed by several offices. He saw both male and female doctors working at their computers as they typed up charts and made notes about their patients’ progress.

His stepsister was a beautiful woman with dark brown, shoulder-length hair.
