Men of God as Fathers - Mary Govan

Mary Govan takes us on a faith journey to inspire all men TO BE MEN and leave a legacy of faith for their families. As a professional educator in America’s public schools, she witnessed the devastation caused by father’s absenteeism and men who do not take on mission to live as God has directed.
In this book, Mrs. Govan explores the lives of the great patriarchs of the Bible and the men in her life to examine the strengths and weaknesses of men as they walk in faith. In this day and age, the role of men as husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons has significantly been diminished. Mrs. Govan wrote this book to remind the world that God has an ordained role for men. She wrote this book to encourage and inspire men to take on responsibilities of the mantle of manhood and become transformational servant-leaders in their homes, churches, and communities.
Mrs. Govan writes as one who has witnessed the lives of men from five generations, diverse cultures, and two countries living to be the men they are called to be. From her life, Mrs. Govan shares the joys and hardships of fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons and the lessons learned. Though written by a woman, this book inspires all men to know that you have a purpose and mission from the Lord. That mission is to build a legacy of faith and hope for your families. So be of good courage and take on the mission, the mantle of manhood the Lord has placed before you. I pray you will be inspired by this book even as I was.

I praise God the Father for inspiring Mrs. Mary A.K. Govan to write about the Men of God as Fathers. The detailed examples from the Bible are wonderfully presented, those who were saved and led their coming generation in the Godly way and the blessings that followed and the fathers that were saved and did not spend their time with their coming generation in the way of the Lord and the consequences that followed. I believe that a woman, as the author, is chosen by God like Deborah instructed Barak to relieve God’s people from mighty oppression of the enemies, so also through the message of this book, fathers will be encouraged to raise their next generation to protect and or relieve them from the hand of the enemy, the devil. Fathers have a greater role in shaping the family in turn the city and the nation. After reading this manuscript, I hope God will lead many fathers to be great examples in raising coming generations.

The writer of the book intends to convey the importance of the influence of men in the spiritual lives of their families. She goes on to include Biblical examples of fatherhood, both good (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Job) and bad (Eli, Samuel, and David). She also went on to note the positive examples of her grandfather, father, husband, and adult son, regarding how they too and currently take care of their families.
The endeavor is a worthy one. She not only cites the strengths and weaknesses of the fathers in the book but summarizes the lessons that are derived from each chapter—each chapter features one father. The importance of fathers spending time with their children, praying with them, reading the Bible with them, and disciplining them appropriately is clearly outlined in the work.
A book that tackles the importance of Biblical fatherhood and practical examples of how to carry out its practice is much needed in an age where there is a crisis of fathers in the home. I have read other books on the topic, though what sets this book apart from the others is the large number of Biblical passages that the author cites to make her point. This allowed me to see characteristics of the Biblical characters that I had not taken the time to consider (e.g., Abraham’s family submitting to his lead of moving to a strange land at the age of 75).
It was an easy read, which I greatly like, as it was not overly wordy.
I enjoyed that there was a Gospel presentation the author focused on being the first step of Biblical fatherhood and how only through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His sanctifying power could fathers even begin to engage in Biblical fatherhood.
Overall, I would recommend the book as a practical guide and example for believing fathers to use in rearing their children. I could not, however, end this review without alluding to the irony—that the book was written by a woman. That fact does not make the book any less true. In fact, it demonstrates the effect of Biblical fatherhood in the lives of women as well as men. I take this as another example of more men needing to come forth and speak on this, and that, just like it was true in Deborah’s time (Judges 4 and 5), a woman was needed to fill the void that was left by the lack of male leadership. Thank you to the author for the encouragement to be Godly men and for the subtle rebuke as well.

The book has great Biblical insight and wisdom. Christian men, fathers, and father figures, need this information in today’s society.
