Calling All Subs

About this ebook
"SUBservient", "SUBsidiary", "SUBstandard", "SUBordinant"—these are only a few of the terms that aptly describe the general sentiment towards Substitute Teachers. As many would attest, it is an unfortunate state of affairs that this attitude toward substitute teachers is not only shared on the part of students, but full-time faculty all the same. Moreover, one may argue that the first word used to describe this essential occupation, "substitute", carries with it a certain level of contempt, and thereby bears some responsibility for the stigma associated with this most necessary aspect of grade school education.
As an educator of eighteen years, who has benefited immensely from the valiant service of substitute teachers, I have noticed that these individuals are viewed more as "substitute" than "teacher." This is neither profitable for the sub, nor the student.

Introduction
This book is for all the substitute or guest teachers who go into the trenches to work in the public school system. Years ago, I was once a substitute teacher, so I feel your pain, I empathize, sympathize and I am asking you why you continue to do it?!
This pandemic which our country has faced has not made it any easier. It has got to be more than for a paycheck…Right? I started to title the book, Stories You Would Not Believe...From Inside of The Public School System,
instead Calling All Subs
sounded so much better since these are just a few stories of me being a substitute teacher. Some of us believe that we can make a difference, even if it is no more than to touch the life of one child at a time who is our future.
I wrote this book because I had a naïve outsider’s view of our public school system and our children, to be honest and transparent. Now, the disclaimer is that every school is not the same. Every school system, teacher, janitor, lunch lady or bus monitor is not the same. But if there is a problem in one school, it is one problem too many, because our children are being impacted. I was impacted. So, what do we do? Do we run? Do we stand?!
Umm, maybe we stand…wayyyyy back because I’m
too old to run…Well, I want to thank you for taking this journey with me in advance… As you will see I like to use a lot of...ellipses in my writing. Please don’t be annoyed, I am not a professional writer, excuse any errors...I’m just someone trying to tell a few funny stories and help make someone’s day!
This Is My Journey…Let’s Travel Together
Let me just give you a brief summary on this journey.
That was the question I kept asking myself... Well, being transparent, I will tell you why I wanted to become a substitute teacher... I needed a job, and I was qualified. I had a wonderful job, but it ended, due to no fault of my
