All the Rage - Satyra Kent

    CHAPTER 1

    RAGE

Rage crossed the hotel lobby at a pace more suited to a track star than to the manager of an exclusive Canadian resort, studiously ignoring the cheeky grins on the faces of his staff. When he reached the front desk, he lifted the pass through and moved to stand next to the concierge, then turned around to frown at the room at large until everyone went back to work. He took a breath and leaned close to the grinning man. Is everything set? he asked and waited impatiently for the reply. Where had the suave professional gone? Oh yeah, he’d lost sight of him immediately after he'd heard the word yes two weeks ago.

Robert nodded, turning his tablet so Rage could read the screen while he spoke.

As we discussed yesterday... and the day before... and this morning... We prepped the suite and put the champagne, flowers, and sweets in both places. We’ll remove the extra after they choose a room.

Rage frowned and ran his fingers through his hair.

Thanks Rob. Sorry to keep bugging you. I just want everything perfect.

So, you said... repeatedly. We have your back, as always, and this is simple compared to everything else we’ve faced. It’s been a hell of a year already. I swear every time I turn around, something big is happening.

My situation is b... he trailed off and nodded ruefully. I guess it just feels big to me. It’s been ten years since I have seen them.

Reunions are tricky, but not major events. And they’re friends, which is not as sticky as say... dealing with exes. Old lovers add a layer of stress I wouldn’t want to deal with so close to the holidays. Especially given all the turmoil from the fire. Don’t worry, we will smooth the waves and you and your old friends will relax and catch up, drama free. Robert said with another smile.

Rage nodded but didn’t reply, leaving the front desk with an absent wave and walking through the lobby towards the bar. Little did he know. Exes. He’d hit the bullseye on that one, but he wasn’t explaining the full situation to his concierge. Hell, he could barely explain it to himself. Normally when a man said he loved someone, it was a single person, male or female, but it was just one. He had fallen for two women at once and now they were on their way here. His phone vibrated as he reached the restaurant bar and sat down. He raised a hand to the bartender and pulled it out to read the text.

‘We’re on the road. Should be there in another hour.’

He smiled, ignoring the sudden rolling of his stomach, and quickly typed his reply.

‘Excellent. Just ask for the manager at the front. Can’t wait to see you.’ He placed his phone on the bar and picked up the drink Ryan slid in front of him while he was typing.

I have never seen that look on your face, Winter said as they walked over to them.

Rage put his glass down and looked up as his good friend and daytime bartender, Winter, leaned against the bar across from Rage and waved Ryan off so they could speak privately.

    What look?

Worried. I have never seen you look unsure of yourself.

Rage shrugged and picked up his drink again.

I’m not worried. Well, maybe a little. I have some friends coming to stay and we didn’t part on the best terms.

Winter nodded sagely, then picked up a cloth and started wiping down the bar. You wouldn’t be worried if they were just friends. Let me guess. One of them has the first initial K or N.

You’re half right. Winter raised an eyebrow and Rage looked around to make sure no one was around to overhear.

It’s them. Krista and Naomi, you know, the reason I took this job.

I thought you took the job because Lucien begged you?

Rage laughed. That too. I remind him of that every time he tries to complain about how long the refit is taking.

Winter leaned in and lowered their voice. No wonder you’re nervous. I had no idea you were even speaking to them after everything that happened. Rage shook his head.

I have been talking to Naomi now for a couple of years, off and on. This is the first time I am going to see them both. Rage admitted, and Winter’s eyebrows shot up into their hairline.

You never said a word! Probably because you finally realized you were an idiot, like I have been telling you for years. They grinned. In that case, you have a right to be nervous.

    Yup. I was an idiot.

We usually are when it comes to love. Winter said sagely and Rage snorted.

Some of us more than others, Rage replied, and Winter waved to Ryan and pointed to Rage’s glass.

Well, here is my advice. Have another glass of liquid courage and prepare to crawl. Oh, and try not to be an ass. Rage smiled at that and pushed his empty glass away. Ryan walked over and slid a fresh drink into its place.

Whatever Winter just said, ignore. We both know they are full of it, eh? Ryan said as he joined them and the three shared a laugh before leaving Rage to drink in peace. He stared down into his glass blindly. He would crawl, beg even. Naomi and Krista hadn’t just been his lovers, they’d been his friends. He wanted that again.
