~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m ambitious.
A woman needs to be ambitious to get ahead. So, when the word came down from headquarters that someone needed to negotiate a long-term financing and management deal for our new China plant, I jumped at the chance to prove myself.
And what an opportunity. A powerful man named Feng Chen was interested in making a deal with us.
A very big deal.
All I could learn about him was that he was a mysterious, but important figure in business deals around the globe.
But other ambitious people had their own ideas.
“I’m going on this trip too, Val,” Melia, the department head said. “I'll run negotiations. You are going to run the numbers, and Steve will come along for legal.”
Steve was a gruff, kind of sour lawyer in his late thirties, reasonably competent and not bad looking.
Financials were my specialty. Melia was taking the lead — and the glory.
But at least I would be flying to China and spending time at the powerful man’s estate. Who knew where that might lead?
At the airport, Hong Jiang, a charming slender, smiling man met us with a limo. He told us Feng was eager to meet us as the chauffeur drove to the estate, a beautiful large place outside of the city.
Walking through the gate, entering a lush courtyard, two burly gardeners took off their hats and bowed low. Despite their subservient manner I couldn’t help but notice they were rough-looking hunks — well-built guys in their early twenties... about my age.
I was even more impressed by Feng Chen.
Given his reputation, I expected a much older man but he appeared to be in his thirties.
He greeted us with a charm offensive and I found him to be as amazing and interesting as he was mysterious. He didn’t have movie actor looks but radiated a confident, electric maleness that was exceptional.
The smiling Hong Jiang showed us to rooms in a wing of the house. Each was small, but comfortable and opened onto the courtyard.
“A common space yet the plants and trees are carefully arranged to provide privacy,” Hong said.
And so they were. As I unpacked, I had the door open and caught a glimpse of one of the hard-muscled gardeners working nearby, his sweating body gleaming in the sunlight.
I cleaned up and rested, thinking about the man.
That night we had a brilliant dinner at a large table in the courtyard. Melia seemed to be staring at Feng. Entranced? Intrigued? I couldn’t tell.
“I am wiped out from the long flight,” I said. “I need a good night’s sleep.”
Although I was tired, when I went to bed I couldn’t fall asleep.
Lying there, I heard noises coming from another room, although I couldn’t be sure which one.
