For all the people who have helped and supported me while publishing the first book.

With thanks to Mum, Dad, Lochie, Eddie, Kenny, Jade and the whole of the Tellwell team for making my book really come to life.

    Chapter 1

I felt uneasy as I trotted through a field and towards the humans’ den. Around me, fluff deer barked in a high pitch.

Couldn’t we just pick off a little one? I’m starving?! Chase whined.

No! I snapped. We need to get to the den.

Come one, Storm. Nobody will notice; besides, it’ll be easy. Micky pleaded. We won’t even have to get downwind of them; we could just leap in and grab—

No! I snarled, feeling fed up. Alpha sent us here for a reason. But even as I said so, I felt uncertain about it. Alpha said she was sending us to check on our fellow canines. She wanted us to go and live with leashed dogs for a while, even though we were a wild pack.

Soon we slipped under a fence and emerged in a field full of bellow hoofs. They moved slowly around us, their black and white coats shining in the midday light. One beside us gave a deep howl-like-bellow. Micky jumped and whined. Chase and I laughed.

You’ll get used to it, Chase yapped.

Suddenly, there was a rumble, and the ground beneath our paws began to tremble.

Chase yelped, It’s an earthquake! he howled.

It’s not an earthquake, Micky snapped. It’s a stampede!

Sure enough, the pack of bellow hoofs were charging straight at us, their heads down and eyes glittering menacingly.

If there was one thing I knew about prey creatures, it was that they were petrified of noise.

I let out a deep howl that changed to a volley of loud barks. A second later, the others caught on. Soon we were all howling, baying, growling and snapping.

The bellow hoofs were nearly on top of us.

    Hold! I barked loudly, Hold!

They’re gonna trample us! Micky whined between the barks.

Hold! I snapped louder than ever. Stay where you are!

Suddenly, the pack of bellow hoofs split down the middle and surged around us. The thundering was loud, and while Chase barked beside me, his calls were drowned out by the monstrous echoes. Finally, the pack passed, and we were left in silence—except for one voice.

Ahead of us, a big black and light tan dog was snapping at a black and white long-haired dog that looked just like Micky.
