Chapter 1
Continuous agony
With the body of her step mother hanging and the body of her step sister laying down lifelessly, intellect's mind was all over the place, he didn't know what the right thing to do in such predicament. However he quickly attended the body of the blind man's wife hanging on a tree branch.
He loosened the rope and took her inside the car together with the blind man's daughter, he rushed them to the hospital and it was then that they received medical treatment.
The blind man's wife was not dead when they found her hanging on a tree, nevertheless, she was already suffocating to the point of death.
In the hospital, the blind man's daughter woke up weeping with a low distinct voice saying; my husband, my mother, my father, they're all dead
she said that repeatedly in expression of grief.
The nurse who was present at that moment tried to calm her down, however she turned her back on the nurse.
It was then that she saw her mother lying on the sick bed next to her, tears were dropping continuously from her mother's eyes, out of curiosity she shouted "mother, mother you're alive, she started gaining some strength and little bit of hope, nevertheless to her disappointment; her mother couldn't utter a word except crying in silence.
Not so long, intellect came in to check on them, luckily he discovered that his step sister has recovered and set to be cleared.
That was good news, but sadly his step mother was still very weak and each time they talk to her, she couldn't respond but rather she continued shedding tears.
Following positive reactions to treatment, her daughter was cleared from the hospital and went home with intellect.
The following day, intellect woke up in the morning as usual to attend to his shop, when the blind man's daughter woke up, intellect was already gone, and she was still harboring the pains of her husband and her Father's disappearance.
In the meantime her mother was not doing well in the hospital. She took a car following the path her husband ran towards the moment he displayed signs of lunacy.
ALONG THE WAY SHE COULD still see the clothes he took off in the process, it was the same clothes he wore on the wedding ceremony. She went out of the car crying, she took the clothes from the ground, embracing them with warmness of heart.
She continued to look around the road hoping to see him again, but there was no signs of anyone. That's when she decided to return home.
Each time she enters the compound, in an illusion she could always see her father sitting under the sausage tree with his walking stick leaning on his left shoulder.
She could always wait there for some minutes and cry before she could proceed into the house. Not so long intellect came back as early as he could so they can both proceed to the hospital to check how their mother was keeping up.
Getting there, they learned that she was same story as before, she couldn't say anything except weeping in agony. While they were still trying to make her talk, the doctor came in and he confirmed to them that she was suffering from stroke that is why she couldn't talk anymore neither would she be able to walk. It was disconsolate news to receive indeed. Nevertheless they later left her in the hospital since she still needed doctor’s attention to care for her.
IN THE INTERIM, THE news about the recent happenings spread across the entire land, people gathered in shock on the streets.
No one could believe that the blind man was nowhere to be found and the new king has lost his mind into the wilderness.
While they were still bewildered, a five years old child came towards them playing with the blind man's walking stick, and everyone knew the blind man's walking stick in the community.
They were more stunned when they saw it, someone took the stick from the child to confirm it, and it was indeed that of the blind man, it had dry spots of blood in it.
They all asked the child at once about where he got the stick, however the way they queried got the child petrified that he started crying and they had to let him go for the time being.
Few men followed the path where the child was coming from hoping at least to get a lead to where the body of the blind man might have been abandoned or either buried since all the signs made everyone to believe that he was truly dead, nevertheless they couldn't find anything for that matter.
Where's the conscience?
The men returned to the mob empty handed, and it was then that everyone lost all hope of finding him and the mad new king of the land. While they were still dwelling on that, a man shouted in their midst saying;
"Where's the conscience?
When greed conceive the desire to kill and self-complacency serves as a justification,
Where's the conscience?
When the price of one's gain is another's life,
And the instinct of individuals are greatly inspired by a sense of wrongful conduct
The heart is filled with unethical motives,
When the urge for flourishing is more than the need for cooperation
Love has turned into a weapon of destruction,
And lies a shelter of concealment for the truth.
Where's the conscience?
Has it gone to the wilderness of resentment, blown away by the wind of opportunism?
Has it derailed from the path of moral principles to the bridle roads of viciousness?
FOR DEATH HAS BECOME a point of settling disputes,
And retaliation a form of reconciliation.
The audacity for hostility has succeeded the timidity for warfare,
On the throne of peace sits impudent aggressiveness,
For ruthlessness is never a dwelling place for contrite
Where’s the conscience?
Has it lost its way to a place of turmoil that our inclination is filled with violence and unrestrained mischievousness?
Has it befriended agony that one would find favor in inflicting pain?
For before the sight of evil, a person's fortune is the main source of attraction
And the satisfaction of another, is someone else's misfortune.
In the bosom of greediness, jealousy speaks a language only cruelty can understand,
And force becomes a valuable weapon of attainment,
Even violence can attest to the perverse acts of shedding blood.
Where really is the conscience?
Suddenly after he was done uttering those words, everyone dispersed to their respective homes, not even a single person was mindful of what the man has just said.
People were in deep worry of the recent happenings in the land and everyone was eager to find out who was behind the whole thing. Few days later, it was quiet in the village. People decided to mind their own businesses after few weeks of seeking for the lost blind man.
However in those weeks, their concern was finding the newly crowned king who was husband to the blind man's daughter.
On the other hand, the blind man's wife was never doing any good at all in the hospital, she was suffering from a severe stroke.
Intellect and his step sister couldn't stop showing their endless support to her until she was discharged from medical facilities.
She was brought home in a wheelchair and still she couldn't manage to talk, meanwhile these recent predicaments brought a negative impact on intellect's business, for he could close the shop any time just to attend to her step mother and sister.
It later became a habit that in every morning, the blind man's wife would wake up and instruct his daughter in a gesture form to take her
