Conceived in the Spirit
February 28, 2009, is where our story begins. It was on that day that Monica Michelle Klinkerman became my wife. Best day ever!
Like many couples, we dreamed of a big house full of children. Monica had never been married, and I entered the marriage with a daughter, thirteen, and a son, four. We were confident we would have at least two or three more children. Little did we know that God had His own set of plans.
One of Monica’s non-negotiables was having children together. She had even covered all bases to ensure I was okay with adoption if we could not have biological children. We were in total agreement; our family would grow.
We tried having children for the next four years to no avail. Monica was a great mother to Faith and Carter, but with every passing month, our dreams of having a baby diminished. The toll on Monica was far greater than it was on me.
I was forty-two when we married, and Monica was thirty-nine. We knew the biological clock was ticking, and we wanted to get started as soon as possible. It was an emotional roller coaster every month. If she was a few days late, our hopes soared only to be dashed a few days later. I attempted to comfort my wife by pointing out our blessings and the beauty of our family. She was a trooper, but I could see the pain growing.
Monica is the oldest of her siblings but the last to marry. When we married, she had many nephews, one niece, and a great love for children. She was a kindergarten teacher and even considered adopting one of her students before our marriage. She always told me about her sweet Sammy, and we proudly posted his picture on our refrigerator.
I could not understand how this woman so full of love could be deprived of the joy of having a child. I read the stories of Sarah, Rebecca, Hannah, and Elizabeth. I did everything I could to muster the faith for a miracle child, but nothing was happening.
Then Monica heard about a doctor in Dallas. He was a leading fertility expert and was holding a seminar at a local hospital. One of the door prizes was a free round of invitro. We signed up in a flash. Hope was springing eternal once again.
We were the first to arrive. We even beat the seminar staff. We entered aur names for the door prize and we were ready to learn about all the latest and greatest fertility options. Finally, we were going to have our questions answered, and we were nine months away from the finish line—so we thought.
The doctor’s presentation was informative. I had no idea there were so many options. He told of one success story after another. We were sold. All we needed was to win that door prize.
Well, we didn’t win the door prize. A couple sitting in front of us won the free round. They had the golden ticket, and we were right back where we started, but the doctor told us he was accepting new patients. Things were looking up once again.
Monica was first in line to set the appointment. It was several months out, but I needed every minute to
