    INTRODUCTION

    Under the Bushel

Recently the world was reintroduced to a long held (or withheld) so-called secret of dedicated seekers and teachers around the world, as well as many others learning the principles of living a fulfilling life. The secret is the Law of Attraction, that is, what you focus on becomes your reality. What you think about and feel most strongly is what your life becomes because you act on it.

Laws within Quantum Physics explain the Law of Attraction: that all things are vibrations, even thoughts, which have tremendous effect on physical phenomena (there are many links on the web to learn more about this).

As a man thinketh, so he becomes.

Be careful what you wish for

    Mind over matter.

Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

These ideas have existed for as long as humans have been learning on this planet. How powerful are thoughts? Have we moved away from this idea that our thoughts and emotions have great power over our lives? Do we really need to control our thoughts, bringing every thought into captivity, as to the Christ? We as Christians are admonished to do so. Is it a principle of living? How does it affect your potential? Do you live in a box of self-limitations, hiding your gifts and light in a box? Are you receiving all of the advantages the Bible promises?

What does the Bible say about this idea of the law of attraction? Does the Bible support it? Did Jesus really teach the law of attraction? This study will guide you to the answers to these questions. You will have to dig as for treasure as Christians have been encouraged to do for centuries. But the treasure you will find is far more valuable than all the gold and diamonds in the world: YOUR JOY FILLED LIFE.

    PART ONE

    Here It Is

    CHAPTER I

    In Search of Self

The search for self-started eons ago, with the first humans. That is a safe assumption given all the ancient scrolls of the Bible, and many hidden scrolls that have been discovered, forums of the Stoics like Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Plato, texts on King David and Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Ezra, Ezekiel, Psalms, Esther, Job, John, and of course, Jesus sayings, and other books and personages. Always trying to understand ourselves and others must have been a common fireside chat. The idea of self-actualization (happiness, existing, working toward your potential, becoming all you can be) has been around for a very long time. Abraham Maslow coined the term. It is a very interesting study, his pyramid of actualization and human needs. Simplepsycholoy.org/maslow.html by Dr. Saul McLeod. This is a very important human health check, both physically, emotionally, and mentally.

We have needs. These needs must be met, starting with the basics of breathing, food, sex sleep, bodily functions. Once these are met, then humans need safety and security. Next, when these basics are satisfied, humans will think about love and belongings, that includes friendship, family, connection. This leads to self-esteem, when confidence is built on achievement, respect of/by others. At the top of Maslow’s pyramid is self-actualization, when humans have time to think about creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, morality, the need for spirituality, search for facts of living a spiritual life.

Have you given this much thought? Wagering that you have, this book will make a lot of sense to you. One cannot live without examining ones life. It is part of the gift of being alive. There is much contemplation in the search for self. Much has been said about it for millenniums. As Solomon, King of Israel said: There is nothing new under the sun. And to the making of books there is no end. This was said thousands of years before the Guttenberg press. Still, ideas are recycled with each generation of thinkers. Nothing new under the sun, just a different perspective.

Rhonda Byrnes’ book and movie, called The Secret, came out in 2006. The ad popped up on my computer one day, as it happened. I perused the site to glean what was offered before I viewed the movie online. Thus aware, I watched the movie online. It floored me. It was exactly what I had been looking for over the last decades without even realizing it. Some of my deepest questions were answered, some of my deepest fears were challenged. I was in for the most exciting and empowering time of my life which continues today. Law of attraction became the key to changing my life, and to bring glory to God. But is it true? Can one actually think ones way to the desires of the heart? Can one change their entire life by focusing and imaging? The masters quoted in the film evidently thought so and applied the principles to their lives. They have been successful in achieving the desires of their hearts, as far as I know.

For Christians, the Bible is the ultimate source for guidance, and prayer is the link to God for answers. Jesus taught his disciples to pray to the Father, acknowledging His Sovereignty and character of agape love, praising Him, asking for His Kingdom to come and His will to be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. In Matthew 6:10-13 we ask for daily sustenance, and for forgiveness and the will to forgive others. This is a gratitude and intentional prayer. It sets the vision on God’s beneficence, on his very real Kingdom, as portrayed by Solomon, and His willingness to provide for all his children, whether they believe in God or not. It also demonstrates a profound faith in the abundance of good for our lives, and how important gratitude is.

As I set about answering the questions about the credibility of the claims in The Secret, my delight and excitement increased with each scripture found. If you have read or seen The Secret, or read anything on the law of attraction (and there are a lot of programs, conferences, literature, and websites available today that were not available a few years ago) you will be acquainted with the term synchronicity. This happens all the time when you are focused on something. For example, have you ever been thinking of a friend all day, when all of a sudden she/he calls you? Or you are really trying to find answers, when you find a quote in a book you’re reading, or hear the exact word or subject on the radio? Have you had this kind of experience with synchronicity? The more you become aware of it, the more it happens. This is what has happened in my search to understand the Christian viewpoint on the Law of Attraction. Scriptures and books blew in to me; I knew the LORD was answering me. The persons featured in The Secret would say the Universe was sending answers to me; by putting out a request by thought and intention, answers were given. Call it the LORD, God,
