    #1

The author would like to thank Mr Raymond Mortimer, Comte Jean de Baglion, Mr Ian Dunlop, and Professor John Lough for reading and advising on the text.

    #2

Louis XIV, the Sun King, fell in love with Versailles and Louise de La Vallière at the same time. He began to give parties there for his young mistress and a band of friends, who were usually 19 years old or younger.

    #3

Louis XIV’s visit to Vaux-le-Vicomte gave him the idea of what Versailles could become. He took a lot of loot from the house, and thought himself justified by the fact that its contents had been paid for out of public money.

    #8

The King stopped crying after his mother died. He made Louise de La Vallière a duchess and legitimized their baby daughter, Marie-Anne. He then began working on his house.

    #9

The King had three main love affairs during the years following the Divertissement of 1668: with his sister-in-law Madame Henrietta of England, with Mme de Montespan, and with Mme de Maintenon. He
