owards the end of the 14th century, Scotland was afflicted by an acute crisis of leadership. The first two Stewart monarchs, Robert II (r.1371-90) and Robert III (r.1390-1406), proved weak rulers, and both had around them large numbers of male relatives only too happy to take advantage of royal impotence. It was in this atmosphere that there emerged one of the most powerful families of the Middle Ages:
