#1
The Spencer sisters, Diana and Jane, were the chief bridesmaid and bride, respectively. Diana was in a floor-length ruffled pinafore-style pink gingham dress with cream-colored puffed sleeves. She was the most romantic of the three sisters.
#2
The Queen Mother was very impressed with Diana, and told the family that she would make a fine match for Prince Charles’s younger brother, Andrew.
#3
Charles, the Prince of Wales, was called the most eligible bachelor in the empire. He enjoyed falling in love, but he also enjoyed the security of a family unit. He felt that marriage was a much more important business than just falling in love.
#4
Diana had always loved cleaning, and she had done some nannying for a family friend. She had hoped to become a famous dancer, but she was too tall for that. She had watched as His Royal Highness moved from one glamorous partner to another, and she felt perfectly at ease in the palace.
#5
The author noticed that Prince Charles seemed especially taken with a sporty-looking blond woman who kept leaning over to him and whispering. The woman didn’t seem the slightest bit intimidated by the prince.
#6
Diana had her own place at 60 Coleherne Court, a few miles southwest of central London. She had been living there since last year, shortly after her eighteenth birthday, when she received two significant coming-of-age gifts: a three-strand pearl choker with a flower-shaped clasp in the front, and an inheritance from her mother’s paternal grandmother, the American heiress Frances Fanny Work.
#7
In 1906, the Ritz was the first hotel in London to allow unmarried women to stay there unchaperoned. In 1980, Lady Diana attended a party there with Charles.
#8
On November 16, the Sunday Mirror published an article claiming that a woman had been seen boarding the Royal Train on the evening of November 5, and that the next day, the woman had been spotted hiding out in the country home of Prince Charles’s close friend and confidant Camilla Parker Bowles.
#9
Charles’s relationship with Diana was the subject of much media attention. He was constantly asked if he was going to marry Diana, and he would prefer to remain single. But the future king of England must have a bride.
#10
The party was a cover for a much bigger event: Diana and Charles’s engagement. The music was playing at such low volume that the dancers’ footfalls sounded louder than the music. Diana danced until five in the morning.
