We visited Rome in the morning, and took in the sights. We walked along the narrow lanes, and each turn revealed a treasure. We saw the hint of a private courtyard, with an orange tree growing out over a high stone wall.

I had a two-bedroom stone cottage and five acres of farmland. I had a job in the city, and an unfinished degree demanded most of my attention. I didn’t have time to pay attention to my pre-school children or my alpacas.

I had tried to make bread from scratch many times before, but never succeeded. I was ready to try again, this time with a good recipe book and help from my husband. I made bread regularly, always on a day when everyone was out of the house.

Our dream was to live the good life, but we were starting to feel endangered. We couldn’t rush living simply because we needed time to grow our own food and preserve it, bake our own bread, and break it with friends.

We decided to become wwoofers – Willing Workers on Organic Farms. We would work during the day and in return receive shelter, sustenance, and cultural immersion. We decided that Italy was the place to go.
