Istand on the deck of my newest half pipe with the owner of the Bachelor Mountain Back Country Park, the two of us watching the sunrise. The cobalt sky is turning pink and orange, and there isn’t another soul out here. It’s my favorite time of the day.

Tomorrow this whole place will be teeming with professional and amateur snowboarders, spectators, staff, and television crews for the Snow Sports Expo, which is awesome in all the other ways that make my job so great, but it’s nice to take it in like this, too.

I sip my coffee, enjoying the way the steam warms my nose. Can you really call it helping? I ask. You paid full price for this. I sweep my arm out, indicating our brand-new creation that’s starting to glow pink as the sky wakes up.
