CHAPTER ONE

CHARLIE

The first time I laid eyes on Violet Duchenne, there was a spark. It was one of those things… It rang through me in that moment when our eyes met like an electric charge. It was a made-for-television moment come to life.

We were in the university’s Freshman Orientation—the A-through-E group—and Violet happened to sit next to me in the crowded lecture hall.

She had leaned over in her chair to get something out of her bag, which was on the floor between us, and her long brown hair had fallen off her back to hang over her shoulder. When she sat up, her hair fanned the air, filling it with the scent of citrus and flowers and sunshine. Without thinking, I inhaled deeply, taking in as much as I could.

Your hair smells amazing, I whispered over the instructor who was droning on about the dining hall.

Violet flinched, clearly startled, but she didn’t say anything. When she looked at me and our eyes met, my heart felt like it actually flipped. It was like something in the air snapped me to attention. Maybe time stopped… maybe not… I don’t know. It was over in a flash, but we definitely had a moment—or at least I did.

I will never forget how she turned toward me as if she wasn’t sure at first it was her that I was talking to. When she met my gaze, her brown eyes locked with mine and her lips parted ever so slightly. Then she gasped in alarm, which is when the magical part ended. In the next moment, her face turned pale. She cringed a little, shrinking back in her seat. Then she lifted a hand to shield her eyes from me and leaned over so her hair formed a curtain, blocking me from view.

I couldn’t tell if she was just shy or afraid of me or what, but I can definitely tell when I’m not wanted so I took her cue and turned my attention back to the lecture, though my mind was stuck in a replay loop of her brown eyes and our brief magical moment the whole time.

That was more than two years ago.

I had a couple of classes with her freshman and sophomore year, and I know we made eye contact a few times, but I never got another opportunity to talk to her. She always seemed to sit on the opposite side of the room from me and rush out at the end of class. But beside those few classes, Violet Duchenne all but disappeared.
