About this ebook

By the middle of the 21st century, reproduction is yet another commodity controlled by the rich. Fertile young women have few options: enter the lottery, offer themselves to the Church...or put themselves up for auction and hope to be claimed by a wealthy man in search of an heir.

Amber desperately wants a child, but she knows the odds of being granted a reproductive license are slim. Her generous curves failed to capture the attention of the High Church, and at 22, she's nearly too old for the lottery.

Her last hope is the Auction House. Amber must submit to a medical exam and then put her fertile young body on display to convince the crowd of virile billionaires to bid for ownership of her body and her womb.

    Opening Bid

I looked at the lottery readout on my phone app, numb, though I knew I shouldn't be surprised. I'd been entering the lottery since my eighteenth birthday, desperate for one of the elusive breeding licenses the government dangled just out of reach of the working class. Every month, another chance to legally have a family; every month, another disappointment.

My family could never raise the money to buy a license, and my parents' status - classified by the government as chronically under-employed - meant I would never qualify for a waiver. My genetic code didn't put me in the small percentage who were licensed for the good of the species. Even my looks failed me, running to soft and curvy rather than the longer, leaner bodies currently in demand; I'd applied to serve the High Church, hoping to trade the use of my body for the child I wanted, but none of the Fathers selected me.

I sniffled a little, swiping the app closed. My twenty-second birthday loomed a week away, and it was time for me to make a choice. I could keep playing the lottery, and hope my next two dozen cards were luckier than the previous forty-seven had been. I could play at religious conviction, and hope that I could attract a Father in person where my database entry had met only indifference.

Or I could sell myself, use of my body and womb going to the highest bidder.

The Auction House had always seemed like a last resort, something easily dismissed when I was young and sure next month would bring me the winning ticket I craved. When I had time to make choices. But while a woman could enter the Lottery until she turned twenty-four, the Auction House only accepted women between eighteen and twenty-one.

One week. I had one week to decide, but in my heart I knew my choice had been made by the damning We're sorry scrolling
