WHAT’S INSIDE...
The shadow of leathery wings passed over Valla as she stood beside the carriage, only the footman and the driver visible in the vast courtyard. She looked up, heart fluttering in her chest at the sight of the black dragon circling above, its scales glistening like gilded obsidian against the azure sky.
The beast let out a bellowing roar that shook the very stones, and Valla frantically tried to retreat back into the carriage. In her haste, the unfamiliar weight of Lucinda's skirts tangled around her legs from the wind of the dragon's descent, tripping her; she fell awkwardly against the side of the carriage, one hand thrown up to shield her face from the grit thrown up by the dragon's descent.
The dragon's wings buffeted the air, creating a tempest in which Valla found herself helplessly ensnared. Hair whipped across her face, obscuring her vision as she struggled to disentangle herself from the mass of skirts. The once gentle breeze had turned into a whirlwind, drowning out every sound save for the thunderous beat of the dragon's wings.
With a final gust, the wind ceased, and Valla dared to lower her arm and open her eyes. Her breath caught in her throat at the sight before her. No longer was there a
