    What’s in Store THIS QUARTER

The Fall quarter titled, God’s Exceptional Choice, traces the arc of salvation history from Abraham to Jesus and on to the early church. Unit I, God Calls Abraham’s Family, is drawn from Genesis and chronicles the origin of the chosen people, Israel, from Abraham to Judah. Unit II journeys through Exodus, Deuteronomy, Judges, and 1 Samuel showing the move to nationhood. Finally, Unit III explores the theme of chosenness through the perspective of the book of Ephesians.

UNIT I— OUT OF SLAVERY TO NATIONHOOD

Unit I, Out of Slavery to Nationhood, has five sessions that explore the call of Israel’s family out of Egypt to become a nation. Lesson 5, from Exodus, highlights the birth of Moses, the women who preserved his life, and his call to lead the people out of Egypt. Lesson 6, from Deuteronomy, tells part of the salvation story of the people of Israel so they might remember and be thankful. Lesson 7, from Judges, lifts up the period of Israel’s history when it was governed by judges, particularly telling the story of Gideon. Lesson 8, from I Samuel, chronicles the transition in Israel’s history from the governance of judges to the selection of Saul as Israel’s first king. Lesson 9 tells of the anointing of David as Saul’s successor to the throne.

    UNIT II—WE ARE GOD’S ARTWORK

Unit II, We Are God’s Artwork, is a four-lesson study of Ephesians. The unit title comes from Ephesians 2:10. In several translations of Ephesians 2:10, the Greek phrase reads we are [God’s] workmanship (e.g., ESV, NASB, NET); but The New Jerusalem Bible begins verse 10, We are God’s work of art. It draws out a unique perspective on the way God has created us. Lesson 10 explores the beginning of the first chapter of Ephesians and the understanding that we are chosen and adopted as children by God through the redemption of Christ. Lesson 11 completes a study of Ephesians chapter 1, with Paul’s prayer that the believers in the Ephesian church might fully understand and access the power and blessings at their disposal because of God’s adoption of them through the saving work of Christ. Lesson 12 shows how Paul reminds the Ephesians that, because of their adoption and God’s love and mercy, they are made alive through the saving power of Christ for the purpose of good works. Lesson 13 is based on the last chapter of Ephesians where Paul encourages the believers in Ephesus to use the spiritual resources, which they have access to because of their relationship to God through Christ, in order to persevere and stand against the evil forces of the world so that they might be Christ’s ambassadors.

    UNIT III—GOD PREPARES THE WAY

Unit III, God Prepares the Way, begins with two lessons on Zechariah from the opening chapters of Luke’s Gospel. Disappointment and doubt cloud Zechariah’s perspective until the promise of a son becomes a reality. This extraordinary experience is the backdrop for Lesson 3—the entrance of John the Baptist, God’s chosen voice to prepare the way for the Messiah. Lesson 4 on Christmas Day celebrates Advent with Mary’s song as she rejoices in the news that God has chosen the humble.
