Military Funeral: Attend up, three shots SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT Attend up, three shots SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT

Attend up, three shots SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT

Equally spaced on top of beautiful, green manicured grass, row after row, mile after mile, as far as the eyes can see, were white tombstones of the many men and women who had given their lives serving their country.

The United States Flag is given to the wife of Sergeant Benjamin Premiers. Sergeant Premiers, killed in Iraq, was in the United States Air Force. Sergeant Premiers was husband to Volette Nicole Premiers and father to two sons, Donta’ and Carl Premiers.

Now that Volette’s husband is dead, she is forced to move off of the military base where they resided throughout Sergeant Premiers’ tour of duty, on only the amount of income she will receive from her husband being in the military. Left with two sons, she is concerned about how she can afford it.

Quickly after her husband’s devastating death, Volette takes a job as a secretary and moves to inner-city Chicago. Donta’, a gifted young man soon to start college at the age of sixteen, will receive the benefits of his father’s veteran pay.

Carl, five years old with special needs, was born with a growth disorder. Even though his mind and clarity appear to be developing at the normal rate of a five-year-old, his body growth is extremely small. Test after test was done while Sergeant Premiers was alive; finally, the Sergeant and his wife decided no more tests for young Carl.

They were a strong family unit: proud Black Americans. The Sergeant was a strong man; so much so that he, in fact, never made a decision based on the needs of his family without discussing it with his beautiful wife

Volette. Together, as a family unit, they decided on family matters. When the Sergeant wasn’t on tour, he always ensured he spent quality time with his family. He was a true man of stature—Well-loved, well respected, and well missed.

Mom, Mom, echoes from the back bedroom in the small apartment (Volette has been forced to take in the inner city of South Chicago), yells Donta’.

Yes, honey, answers his mother as she walks to Donta’s bedroom.

Mom, I can’t go to school right now, not right now. Total silence lingers, then Donta’ continues, Mom, it’s not fair that you have to work so hard; I need to go to work and help you out.

Stop it right now, his mother insisted. As much as I love you and your wonderful heart, you must go to school, and the time is NOW, YOUNG MAN!

But mom, Donta’s words are cut off by his mother, no, but mom, you will go now, she says. Baby, it was Dad’s and my decision that our boys would go to college by any means necessary. We decided this together the very first day we found out I was pregnant with you, and we continued that thought and conversation when Carl was born. We don’t want to let Dad down, do we?

But Dad is dead, Donta’ says, with tears in his eyes. His mother reaches over and hugs him while hugging Donta’; young Carl walks into the room and says, Dad’s not dead.

Donta’ and Volette turn to look at Carl as he continues to speak, Dad is sleeping with GOD with this, the whole family begins hugging and crying as one.

See what I mean, baby, Volette says to Donta’; you have to go now. Yes, mom, he replies as they continue to hug as a family and cry softly.

The strangest thing is that Volette truly believes that nothing happens by chance. There is a reason for every sacrifice. She believes in GOD and all of His power, word, and love; this is what she and her husband taught their sons to believe. With the sacrifice of losing her wonderful husband and father to her sons, she regained a strange strength of digging deep down inside herself with the mindset of succeeding.

Knock, knock, is heard at the door. Volette opens it.

Hello, may I help you? Hello, the lady says at the door, my name is Juliet; I live next door. I just wanted to say hello.

Hi, My name is Volette, and these are my sons, Donta’ and Carl. Hello, says Donta’, and my name is Carl, Carl asserts. C-A-R-L, as he spells his name for Juliet. Everyone laughs.

Well, hello, Donta’ and Carl, C-A-R-L, Juliet spells out to Carl as she shakes both Donta’s and Carl’s hands.

Would you like some tea? offers Volette. Yes, answers Juliet.

So, how long have you lived here? Askes Volette. Four years, answers Juliet. What brings you to Chicago? Juliet counters.

My husband’s death, Volette responds solemnly.

    I’m sorry, Juliet quickly replied.

Don’t be; my husband was the bomb: he was fine, smart, a good husband and father who believed in GOD, his country, and his family, so don’t be sorry, Volette says with a smile so large it covered her face.

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this look on the face of someone who has lost someone, Juliet said in amazement.

See, that’s the difference, I haven’t lost someone, yes, my husband is dead, but his spirit lives on in our sons and me. So I will do whatever I can to keep his wonderful memories alive.

You are one strong lady. Juliet gushes.

Yes, very strong, Volette confirms with confidence.

    Chapter 2

    Donta’ Leaves for Collegee

One month later, it was time for Donta’ to leave for college. But, unfortunately, on the morning for Donta’ to go, Volette’s old car stalls.

Come on, Mom, get it started; I don’t want to be late for my first day of class, Donta’ said.

Damn, said Volette after trying to start the car several times.

Come on, baby, we don’t want to be late, Volette says in haste as she and her two sons jump out of the car.

What are we going to do, Mom, asked Donta’?

Knock, knock, knock onto Juliet’s door. Hi, it’s three o’clock in the morning; what’s going on? Juliet asked in a sleepy voice.

I’m sorry to wake you, but Donta’ has to be in class today, and my car won’t start; please help me, please give us a ride to his school?

Better yet, how about I let you use my car? Juliet suggested. Come on in, let me get you the keys.

    Thank you so much, Juliet.

    No problem.

Come on, boys, let’s unload the car quickly. As they transferred Donta’s property into Juliet’s car, Volette realized how much time had passed, so she turned and knocked on Juliet’s door again.

Juliet, I’m sorry I hate to keep bothering you, but I need another favor.

    Sure, what’s up?

Please let Carl stay with you until I get back?

    No problem, says Juliet.

Baby, you stay with Juliet until mommy gets back.

After taking Donta’ to school, Volette returns to Juliet’s apartment.

Knock, knock, Hi Mommy, Carl says when he opens Juliet’s door.

Hi honey, she picks Carl up and kisses him. Where is Juliet? She immediately inquires. Oh, there you are Volette said. Thanks, girl, thanks a lot, Volette hands Juliet the keys. Now for you, young man, I don’t want you to answer the door without Juliet or myself anymore, okay?"

    Okay, mommy.

Girl, I’m sorry I was in the bathroom, Juliet said to Volette.

It’s okay, but we don’t live in the best of neighborhoods, you know. So once again, thank you for this morning. I put in some gas and will pay you for keeping Carl on Friday.

    As I said, No problem.

Well, I think I’ll go home and take care of my little man.

Talk to you later, Juliet said. See you later, C-A-R-L, she says to Carl before closing the door.

Your name is Carl Everett Premiers, now say it, baby.

My name is Carl, C-A-R-L, said little Carl.

That’s right, now let’s practice spelling your whole name, baby.

    Okay, mommy.

Everett, E-V-E-R-E-T-T, Volette spells as Carl repeats until he spells his full name three times. I’m tired, mommy, Carl says. ‘Okay, baby, she says with a chuckle, let’s go.

Later that evening, Juliet came over to Volette’s apartment. Hey, what’s up, Volette says when she opens the door for Juliet.

I’m bored, so I just thought I’d come over.

Good, you can stay for dinner. Volette and Juliet headed to the kitchen.

Damn, it smells good in here Juliet, what are you cooking?"

Fresh spinach, fried chicken, cream potatoes, and cornbread.

    Can I help? asked Juliet?"

Yes, you can peel the potatoes while I start the chicken.

    Where’s Carl?

He’s in the bedroom watching the cartoons; he thinks he’s the big man now that he has the bedroom all to himself, Volette says with a smile.

Ten minutes later, a yell comes from the back bedroom that Donta’ and Carl shared, Mom, I’m hungry. Carl was standing at the kitchen door the next minute, Mom, can we have kool-aid tonight?

What kind would you like? Volette asks as she smiles at Carl.

    The red kind, Mom.

Say hello to Ms. Juliet, Volette tells Carl. Hello, Ms. Juliet, Carl replies.

Hello Carl, C-A-R-L, she says with a smile.

I can spell my whole name now. Want to see?

Yes, Juliet answers. Carl starts to spell his name and gets stuck with his middle name. Mom, can you help me? Everett, E-V-E-R-E-T-T, Volette spells alone with Carl. Good job! Juliet exclaimed.

After finishing up dinner, everyone is full and happy. Juliet offers to help Volette with the dishes. No, just keep me company, Volette replies."

Volette, what’s on your mind? Juliet asked.

Well, I start on this new job tomorrow, but I don’t have a babysitter for Carl, and up to now, we have been living solely on the income I receive from my husband’s military pay. So there is no extra money to pay for the cost of daycare.

Can’t you get help with the ‘No child left behind program’ payments? Juliet asks

    What program? Volette inquires.

‘No child left behind.’ If not that one, I know some programs are available to single mothers to help with daycare.

Well, I’m sure there are such programs, but I start work tomorrow.

How about I keep him, and when you can, you can enroll him in a daycare.

No. I don’t want to put you out. I don’t know how to beg; that’s not my style."

Beg. Girl, you’re not begging. I suggested this idea, not you, Me. Look, it’s like this, Volette; we all need help sometimes."

Okay, that’s a good idea. Carl enjoys being with you, so it will be much easier for him to stay with you. Thanks, Juliet; I don’t know what I would do without you.

Since I work nights, this will work out perfectly, said Juliet.

    Chapter 3

    The Attack on Carl

It has been said that the road is paved with good intentions, and Juliet’s intentions were pure and came from her heart. All seemed well until a change of events took place. One week after Volette started to work, her world started to crumble when she received an urgent call from Juliet.

Juliet slow down; I can’t understand what you’re saying, Volette says on the telephone.

The next thing you know, Volette drops the telephone and runs for her car in a dash to leave her new
