CHAPTER 1
If it’s not one thing, it’s another,
I sigh as I toss the carton of melted ice cream that was sitting on the kitchen counter into the trash can. I know none of my three kids will own up to leaving the ice cream sitting out. I also know that the culprit could just as easily be my husband, Jack. Between the never-ending piles of laundry, dishes, and random spills on the floor, I’m really feeling burnt out in my daily routine as a stay-at-home mom. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely blessed that Jack’s career in finance affords me the opportunity to stay home with the kids, but I often feel alone and unfulfilled. I’m technically only home with our youngest, Sophia, all day, every day, but I obviously can’t talk about adult problems with a four-year-old. I can’t help but think my loneliness is only going to worsen once Sophia goes off to kindergarten next year. Maybe I’ll get a job and finally be around other adults. I have a bachelor’s degree in biology, but I don’t have any formal work experience. Being a full-time mom and wife is all I’ve ever known.
Thinking back to my college days, I remember being a driven, independent woman with a future in medical sales already mapped out. A chance meeting with Jack in the university library proved that unexpected curveballs could interrupt even the best-laid plans. Jack, being his witty, charming self, first drew me in with a joke about the selection of books I was planning on checking out. Based on a thirty-minute conversation, I knew Jack was someone I couldn’t live without. From the very beginning, I put him on a pedestal where he could do no wrong in my eyes. Juggling school and dating was hard, but even through challenging course loads and late-night study sessions, Jack remained at the forefront of my thoughts. I was madly in love with him and just knew he would be my husband one day. Imagine my excitement when I found out I was pregnant with Jack Jr. a month before graduation. I felt like we were destined to be a family, and I really hoped Jack felt the same way.
Jack graduated college four years before me and was already establishing a name for himself in the finance world. His father started a very successful accounting firm, and it was always expected that he would join the firm after college. Jack had a very privileged upbringing, and some may even say he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He grew up in the kind of family that had a separate nanny for each kid and vacationed in Europe during breaks from school. To many, they were living the American dream. A pregnancy out of wedlock was certainly frowned upon, especially since it could tarnish the perfect reputation they worked so hard to uphold. Jack did right by his family and married me as soon as I graduated, although I like to believe it was because he really loved me and knew we were meant to be together forever.
Opposite of Jack, I came from extremely humble beginnings. My dad took off when I was five, leaving my mom, Betty, to raise me, my older brother, and younger sister all on her own. She worked two jobs during my entire childhood and teenage years. Luckily, I was awarded every scholarship I applied for so she wouldn’t have to get a third job to put me through college. I often felt guilty for going off to college and leaving my mom behind, since my brother and sister both decided to stay in
