CHAPTER 1
The Street Block
Scrape! Clang! Scrape! Clang! Cliff and his mother arrived in Queens, New York to the sounds of metal tables and chairs being dragged onto concrete pavements. The neighborhood was getting ready for the yearly block party. Cling! Cling! There was the sound of metal hitting concrete, as seating areas and tents were set up. The outdoor speakers were bigger than ever this year.
Cousin Doll was at the gate preparing the table, so Cliff ran ahead of his mother. Cousin Doll wasn’t a blood cousin, but she might as well have been. She held the family gatherings and celebrations that everyone attended. There was always occasion for a potluck.
Duante! Quisha!
Cliff yelled. He didn’t have to wait to play. His cousins were already there. Cliff and Duante were the same age. Quisha was Duante’s younger sister.
Yeah! You’re just in time!
said Quisha. We were going in the street to play.
Without me?
Cliff was offended.
No. We were waiting for you,
said Duante. Cousin Doll said you were close.
Okay. Let’s go! Maybe we’ll find some sticks by that big tree.
Cliff pointed.
Can’t you play without bringing dirt and sticks in the house,
said Shandra, shaking her head.
Nope,
said Cliff.
They might even have a tire swing for kids on that tree,
said Duante.
What tree are you talking about?
said Cliff’s mom.
The tree over there.
Cliff pointed again to the big tree in the middle of the road.
It’s probably one of their imaginary trees,
said Shandra looking at her older brother Monty. Mmmm.
Shandra, go with them and make sure they don’t get into trouble,
said Grandma. This grandma wasn’t Cliff’s grandma from South Carolina. But she was everybody’s grandma.
Yes, please do. Thank you,
said Cliff’s mom.
Can’t you send Monty?
Shandra hated that she was always put in charge of watching the kids while the adults were busy.
Shandra’s mother joined just in time to hear her protests. You’d better go after those kids and make sure they’re okay.
Cliff, Duante, and Quisha did not get very far. They were distracted by the smells and sounds of people getting ready for the block party.
Sizzle! Sizzle! Some people already had their grills going. The smells of barbecued steak and chicken were entering the
