Feral Blood - E.L. Jones
CHAPTER ONE
Amanda ran to her mother’s room right after the panthers had left.
Mother?! Mother?! Are you alright?? Where are you?!
She searched her mother’s room and went outside to her balcony. Panic setting in, she looked out to the dark forest and felt Rowan behind her. Where is she?
Amanda shook her head and tears started to well up in her eyes
I don’t know!
Rowan exclaimed.
They walked briskly towards the forest and found what appeared to be blood by their feet. No...!
They ran deep into the woods, following the scent of their mother. When Eve’s scent vanished, Amanda stopped and began to sob.
They killed her, Rowan! They didn’t even leave us her body!
You don’t know that!
Disbelief and mixed emotions ran through Rowan’s mind. We have to get back and tell Roman. We need to stick together!
.
BANTU WAS NOT PLEASED at all. He hated himself, he hated this mission, and he hated that he had failed yet again. What will father say? He asked himself this over and over again as the other Panthers who came with him stared on. They too, were confused as to why they had fallen short.
What happened out there?
Bantu spat at his fellow Panthers. Huh, what happened?
There was silence and Bantu was beginning to feel more and more worked up by the minute. An idea was starting to form in his head and he didn’t like it. But he knew it was the only explanation. Why else would the wolves not be home the one day that the Panthers decided to attack? Why did they go? Unless, the Kilani tribe was onto them already. How could this be? No one outside of the Panthers knew about their plan of attack.
Bantu eyed each one of his Panther brothers and he was honestly losing trust for them. One of them had betrayed him, that was the only logical reasoning he had. One of the Panthers was working for the Kilani’s. It all made sense now, how they had evaded the attack.
But on the other hand, if the Kilani’s knew they were coming, why didn’t they use the opportunity to do a counter ambush? The Panthers would have been sitting ducks. It was all very confusing and as Bantu glanced at his brothers one by one, he immediately became filled with rage.
He stopped in front of on of them and looked him in the eye
I’m going to ask you this one time,
Bantu said. Have you been in touch with the Kilani tribe?
The Panther was about to speak when Bantu stopped him with a wave of his hand, before saying slowly, Think carefully before you answer. The next words may be your last.
With that, Bantu’s nails turned into panther claws and he flashed them at the panther before him. Go ahead, speak.
The Panther brother paused. He thought this was a little extreme and wondered if Bantu knew what he was doing. They had all been living miles away from the Kilani tribe and for years they had not even known about the location of the wolves, so how was it possible that any one of them would be working with the wolves?
Besides, they had been trained and taught to hate wolves all their lives. How could Bantu think any one of them would be working with those vile creatures?
My Lord,
the panther began, I would live and I would die for the Panthers, but never in a million years would I serve the wolves. All I have is my word and my bond.
Bantu paused and watched his eyes intently. With his claws still drawn out, he waited for a sign that he was lying. But the Panther brother stayed still, his eyeballs fixed on Bantu. They were not dancing around, there was no ounce of fear in them, and not for one second did the Panther brother look away.
Bantu nodded slowly and moved on to the next Panther.
By the end of the night, Bantu was convinced that none of his brothers had betrayed him. He cursed under his breath. They had been so close to snuffing out the wolves. Dad would have been so pleased. And now, when the news got to him, he would be so disappointed. All his life, he had always wanted to do right by his father. He never cared when anyone else applauded his feats, if his father was not impressed, then he had done nothing.
All his life, the Panther Lord had never been impressed by anything he did, even when others were. But as hurt as
