All three of the G’Witch triplets, Olivia, Esme, and Agatha were gliding into the edge of the forest surrounding the Magnifico Finishing School of Magical Arts, the academy where their guardian and beloved Uncle Rufus had opted to send them to acquire all the skills they would need in the future as adults citizens of the Witches and Wizards Galaxy.

They were just finishing a ride in the stratosphere provided by the children of Dot, Esme’s giant ladybug companion and friend that she herself had both nurtured and raised.

She had nursed Dot after finding her in the area of what everyone at Magnifico referred to as The Edges. It was a forbidden area, separate and unwarded, and students were not supposed to go there. Yet for Esme, who had the soul of a poet and the individualism and magical acumen of a warrior witch, it was the perfect retreat when she wanted to be alone to gather her thoughts, or even practice some of the magical charms considered verboten on the Magnifico campus.

Esme had been in mourning after one of the elite group of young male Magicals known as the Little Disciples had followed her and slaughtered her favorite and devoted pet. When his romantic overtures toward Esme had been spurned, Vincent DeMorrow, the President of the Little Disciples took his revenge by serving Esme a sauce he’d made out of Dot after he slaughtered the giant Ladybug. Esme’s response was instantaneous, and she had nearly gotten expelled for attacking the wicked and pompous class President Vincent. Fortunately, the Little Disciples had only been guests at Magnifico for one semester.

The G’Witches landed their adorable baby ladybugs and made sure that they were fed tender foliage and given water to drink before they hurried off up the expansive rolling hills to Magnifico so that they wouldn’t be late for Charms Chapel. All of them were elated.

There was a guest speaker scheduled for that day from Wand Central, and the representative was going to demonstrate the Switch Wand, which was so compact that it could easily fit into the pocket of their cloaks but could be switched open quickly, much like a switchblade knife.

All the sisters, particularly Olivia, were interested to know if the convenience of the new wand would compromise its effectiveness at all. And also what it was made of. Even in the case of traditional wands, different materials tended to conduct Magical energy differently. Some wands made out of gem material or metal certainly were thought to be more effective than the traditional wands crafted from wood. Very few of the students at Magnifico had anything but the wood hewn wands since the other alternatives were highly expensive.

The witch triplets had made a brand new friend in transfer student Aurelia Fussbaum, who had arrived with the reputation of being the possessor of one of the most unusual witch abilities in the magical realm.

Aurelia was rumored to have the vox magic, the magic voice. Her range was impressive, as with most of the witches who inherited this legendary gift which supposedly only occurred once every hundred years.

Not only could she put an entire auditorium to sleep when she sang a lullaby, but she could sing at levels beyond the range of human hearing, a trait that she could use as a weapon as she was able to send predatory and dangerous animals running to get away from it, as well as humans, whose ears would begin to bleed and heads to throb after a mere ten second exposure to her voice.

Demonstrating that would have been beyond the limits of the Magnifico Finishing School for Witches Magical Safety and Security Standards and Code of Ethics, but it was rumored that Aurelia could also whistle like any bird, understanding their songs and was also able to call flocks of the feathered creatures to her.

All the G’Witches were anxious to see a demonstration of that. And they had something to offer in return-a ride on one of Dot the giant ladybug’s progeny!

Every year Magnifico began and ended with a Wandoff Competition . It was employed as a way to test wanding skills at the beginning of the year and retest at the year’s end to determine how much progress had been made.

The competition was divided into groups depending on what year they were in at Magnifico, with first years competing only with first years and on up to 7 th years.

The competition was unisex, and students were paired randomly to wand duel with their peers with no regard to gender. This was to ensure fairness and also give students the experience of learning what they were up against on the global stage, because the select group of Magicals that were hand selected to attend the prestigious Finish School for Witches came from all four corners of the globe.

Most, but not all of them, were from families with a long tradition of Occult involvement and Spell Casting.

Benjamin Cucumber was from one of the families whose legacy was to produce a witch or wizard only once every seven generations. He was the so-called Anointed One, his birth long awaited for and his magical abilities apparent nearly from birth. For example, rather than needing a crib mobile hanging over his infant crib, Benjamin was able to summon real butterflies to hover above him, willing them to travel in swirling and tilting colorful circles above his head.

If he wanted a particular toy, he merely crooked his baby pinky, and it was transported from the toy shelf to his crib. Of course, he was fawned over by not only his large family but also friends of the family and the townsfolk themselves, all of whom believed in magical beings and practitioners.

He was raised in a small town in Nova Scotia named Mahone Bay that had a history of being a stronghold for Pirates. Despite the occupation of its rowdy seafaring forebearers, his innate abilities were accepted more readily by the superstitious population, many of whose most prominent families had resided there for many generations.

By the time Benjamin Cucumber was a preteen he was adept enough at light magic to be called upon to provide elemental light shows, which he was able to provide by not only calling in the magnetic Northern Lights but also using lightning bolts to create differently colored nuclear fission reactions in thunderclouds, creating starburst of different colors in the upper atmosphere that could be seen for miles around.

He was also adept at creating Sprites or electrical charges appearing as bursts of red lightning in the night sky. The red lightning was a phenomenon known as Dragon’s Breath, and Benjamin’s ability to produce it was a highly prized skill.

Headmaster Mandrake Magnifico had been well aware of Benjamin Cucumber since his birth and had immediately extended an invitation to the young boy’s birth family not only for Benjamin to attend Magnifico but also offering a full ride scholarship.

Although Benjamin’s birth family had roots in Nova Scotia nobility, they had fallen on hard times due to the gambling habits of the males in the family line, resulting in the depletion of both their treasuries and also their land holdings.

As a result, after very little discussion, Benjamin’s family sealed his future magical instruction by signing a binding contract with Magnifico, agreeing that he would attend all seven years at the world renowned Magical Finishing School.

After a round of contests on the Opening Day of School between the two upper levels of students, the 6 and 7 years, Benjamin found himself facing off against a pretty curvaceous blonde witch with a pair of the biggest hooters he had ever seen.

From the announcement over the loudspeaker he knew that she was one of the very popular Fairchild witch triplets that also attended Magnifico, but because the population of the school had swelled along with its reputation, he found that he traveled in different circles and had never gotten to know any of the sisters on a first name basis.

He had heard, however, that she was a wicked quick caster, and he felt himself becoming slightly nervous. If Benjamin had a character flaw it was that he hated to lose, in anything. Because he had always been taught that since he had come into some formidable magical abilities, much would be expected of him, he keenly felt that he must succeed in all his endeavors, ace all his classes and graduate as Summo Pythonissam, or Top Witch of the entire class.

From what he had heard, one of Agatha’s sisters, Olivia, was his chief competition.
