Whether you’re a beginner looking to introduce yourself to the world of Creative Makeup, an amateur wanting to expand your horizons, or a seasoned professional seeking to reignite the creative flame, delve into this book with no holds barred. It will take you on an amazing adventure!

Each of the 12 looks I have designed has grown from a love of colour, character, and artistry. Drawing inspiration from eras, stories, and life-long fascinations, they bring together a spectrum of fun that will enable you to explore your passion for makeup. They are designed to unlock your talent and equip you with the techniques and knowledge to improve your own skills, enabling you to create your own masterpieces. I truly believe everyone is capable of achieving incredible work through practise, so find joy in discovering your own original vision through learning how to produce the designs in this book. Each section will provide you with tips, techniques, and skills to complete each look. The 12 makeup designs progress in technical difficulty and the expected time they will take to complete, and each one will equip you with more knowledge to allow you to develop your artistry. I have included a comprehensive kit list at the beginning of this book that contains all you need for all of the designs, with honest tool and product recommendations for each look. It will allow you to build your collection of makeup, brushes and other tools easily and utilize it efficiently. With practise and plenty of play, you will perfect your craft by exploring each item and discover where your fascination lies.

These creations are great staples for you to learn and have in your makeup arsenal. They can be adapted and employed for a variety of settings, and will set you up to venture on your own journey and carve your own pathway of design. INSPIRATIONS AND MOTIVATIONS

Coming from a practical art and design background, with a range of educational and business experience, my career has taken me on a journey that led to the world of Creative Makeup. It has allowed me to harvest experience and skills from a wide spread of disciplines, placing me in an ideal position to share my knowledge and passion for makeup design. Studying Art and Design to Master’s level enabled me to understand and fall in love with the worlds of colour, mark making and creative storytelling. I continue to use the fundamental skills of drawing, colour balance, composition and mark making in my Creative Makeup work, and I have sprinkled these skills throughout the 12 makeup looks ahead.

Since childhood I have drawn inspiration from the environment and the heritage around me, combining that with a love of learning and discovery. As a citizen of Liverpool, I was lucky to visit the galleries, museums and libraries there throughout my life, and these provided me with an infinite source of wonder. Living in such an eclectic and historical city gave me an insight into local and also into world art, igniting my brain with myths and tales of years gone by. I have continued to explore many creative and academic avenues, as both an amateur and a professional, seeking out the beauty of art, theatre, music and reading. These have been my four pillars of learning and form the basis of my artistic identity. In addition to exploring influences, learning to free my creative expression by employing emotions and passion was incredibly liberating, and this remains something that I uphold today. For instance, the Flapper Starlet look in this book was inspired by the fashions of the Roaring Twenties, but I have taken it in my own direction.

A passion of mine is the endless source of wonder in the world of nature and the environment, and I’ve always found this area particularly evocative and igniting. Looking for patterns on insects, colour combinations in sealife and mark making in landscapes – these can be a truly wondrous source of inspiration for injecting into Creative Makeup. The Woodland Fae look is just one example of how nature has influenced my work.

You can learn the skill of Creative Makeup and utilize it for personal passion, or to grow as an artist within an assortment of specialisms. The fundamental techniques that I will show you will provide you with a base to flourish from, and will begin to direct you toward your specific creative goals. This skill set is an ideal learning base for Retail or Brand Artistry, Cosplay, Theatre, TV/Film work, Special Effects, Editorial and everyday makeup. Through research and exploration of different avenues you will be empowered to carve your own path, and by continuing to seek further education and knowledge, you will be able to achieve your ambition. Remember, you are capable of anything
