A Polka Dot Friar
Franciscan Father Declan O’Shea sat on a five-gallon plastic bucket and picked at the splotches of brightly-colored paint that dotted his russet brown habit. He was at Paintball Tralee in County Kerry, where he’d been asked to bless a new shipment of low-velocity, pump action, spring-powered splatball rifles to be used by youngsters in their mock skirmishes on the seven-acre competition site.
The woodland battlefield included bunkers, a fort, and even a scaled-down church with a sniper’s steeple.
The blessing and dedication ceremony went well enough and it looked like there’d be no afternoon rain. But when a gang of
