Call You Mine - Janet Berry

    Acknowledgements

To my aunts, Judy and Belinda, thank you for being there for us all of these years.

We appreciate it more than you could ever know.

    We love you.

    Chapter One

Is it really that big though? Like really?

Delia Jacobs rolled her eyes at the new nesters, choosing to ignore their inappropriate conversation as they waited for calls.

Hey Delia, can you help me? one of the nesters called, and Delia headed in their direction.

What’s up, Roger? she asked, the older gentleman smiling brightly at her.

I’ve checked this man’s account multiple times, but there’s nothing showing an issue. He says he doesn’t have service, but his bill was recently paid, and everything’s fine.

Delia leaned over and checked the account, flipping between the customer’s user profile and his billing information.

Checking one last page, she pointed it out to him.

It looks like the customer paused his account. He’ll need to unpause it now that his bill is paid to resume his service.

Oh, thank you, he replied, adjusting his glasses as he leaned into look closer at the screen.

You’re welcome, Roger. If you need anything else, let me know, okay?

He beamed at her. I will.

With one last smile at Roger, Delia moved on, heading down the nearest row to her.

When she saw Trent Barnes coming her way, she turned to the nearest person and asked, Hey, how are you doing? She clasped her laptop in front of her.

I’m doing good. Did I do something wrong? Athena asked, and Delia shook her head.

No, no, of course not. I’m just checking up on everyone in case they needed help.

    Which Athena did not.

She was one of the best nesters Delia had ever worked with, so she definitely didn’t need help.

Are you hiding from someone? Athena whispered, leaning over to Delia.

Delia’s face flamed, and she shook her head. What? Why would you think that?

    Athena clearly didn’t believe her.

He’s gone, by the way, she said, and Delia snuck a peek in the direction Trent had come from. She didn’t see him and released the breath she’d been holding.

Have a good rest of your day, Delia, Athena said, turning back to her computer, effectively dismissing Delia.

See you later, Athena, Delia replied, heading back down the row.

An hour later, Delia let one of the team leaders that she was going on break.

All right. Just let me know when you get back. There is an SEO meeting in about an hour, Harper Davis reminded her.

Okay. I’m just going to run downstairs for a snack from the cafe, Delia stated, putting her laptop down on her desk.

Hey Delia, if you’re going to the cafe, can you grab me a Monster? She turned to face Trent, who was leaning on the divider between her desk and his.

Pasting a smile on her face, she said, Sure. Cash or Venmo?

He pulled out his wallet and handed her a few dollars.

That should be enough. If it isn’t, just let me know, and I’ll pay you back. Okay?

    Okay.

She auxed out for break and left the floor, making her way to the elevators.

Her mind immediately went back to the Destin Christmas party last year at a bar downtown.

That night was an interesting night for Delia. She had come alone after her boyfriend of a year broke up with her the week before, even though she said she wouldn’t go.

Harper had convinced her though, and she joined her and her boyfriend at the time, Carter Hansen, at the bar.

Where Trent Barnes had been, looking so amazing in his black dress pants and white button down, and a dark-purple coat. His look was topped off by his black skinny tie and his usually unruly hair slicked back.

She wasn’t sure how many drinks she had that night, but it was enough to let Trent know exactly how hot she thought he was. When he had returned the compliment by telling her how beautiful she looked in her little black dress, she let go and danced with him all night, leading to a hot encounter in the bathroom.

Harper had walked in on them before it led beyond making out, and she promptly dragged Delia from the bathroom, and the bar.

Carter drove them home, and Harper put Delia to bed.

The next day that both Trent and Delia worked, Trent asked her out. Delia was so embarrassed about how she acted, she refused and told him she just needed time.

When her ex said he wanted to get back together, she put her feelings for Trent on hold.

Look how that worked out for you.

Mason had cheated on her less than a week after she’d agreed to give him another chance, so she ended their relationship for good.

The elevator doors opened, and Delia went to step on, only to almost run into Danny Bradshaw, one of their operations managers.

Hey Danny, how are you doing today? she asked, concerned by the look on his face.

His face transformed into a smile, and he replied, Doing okay. Just numbers, as usual.

Hopefully they’re not too bad, Delia said, stepping onto the elevator.

No, we’re doing fine. Even better than Chicago.

    That’s good.

They were quiet for a few minutes before Delia asked, Danny, are you sure everything is all right?

He flashed a dazzling smile, then ran his hand through his shaggy blond hair.

Yep. Just been busy with everything lately. Trying to keep up with everyone is getting hard. Too many fights going on now.

Delia winced. Well, hopefully we won’t have any more of those.

    With Eliot around? he asked.

She sighed. Even with her around. Just pray she stays out of trouble.

Delia could hear Danny’s laugh as the elevator doors closed and began its descent.

She reached the ground floor a few minutes later and hurried into the cafe, making her way across the large room to the vending machines to grab what she needed.

Her stomach growled as she passed the large hibachi station, pausing to watch the chef’s show.

I’ll have to come back down here at lunch, she murmured, before leaving the station.

She grabbed Trent’s Monster from one of the drink fridges and then stepped up to the vending machines to grab her snack.
