Reviews for The Tourette Syndrome and OCD Checklist
2 ratings1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The title of this very dense, and well written, book might better use the plural "checklists" rather than the singular "checklist." Sections three through five explicitly group multiple checklists for use by parents (Sec. 3), teachers (Sec. 4) and "Other Helpful Checklists for Parents and Teachers" (Sec. 5). A lot of these are lists of things to observe or do (e.g., "What Parents Can Do at Home and at School . . ."), but there are a number of actual lists with check boxes consisting of different observational options. For example, section Three's "Home Behavior Assessment" asks:1. The specific behavior observed is:__ Refusal to comply__ Aggressive behavior towards others__ Disrespect__ Meltdown or ragesThe book does not generally define the terms used in these lists, so individuals will have to decide what actually comprises "disrespect." If this were a work directed towards professional clinicians or diagnosticians, that would be a fatal flaw. But, since the intended audience is not the professional or research community, it's probably not a big deal. I would still recommend that this is a book that should accompany other, more comprehensive, books about OCD and Tourette's. Section Five, "Other Helpful Checklists," does list a short bibliography of other recommended works on the subject. I'm hesitant to consider this a stand-alone purchase on the subject.I don't hesitate to recommend it very strongly to its intended audience. It very responsibly, and very nicely starts out with an overview, with definitions(!) of these two disorders, as well as related disorders such as ADHD and dysgraphia. Note that there are no citations in the body of the text, so this book would be less useful for someone formally researching this subject.I can easily give this 5 stars since it is spot on for its intended audience of parents and teachers. My caveats have more to do with the wrong audience purchasing and using this book.NOTE: The reviewer received a free copy of this book via the Amazon Vine Program. This review is also posted there.
