Aurik stood in the debriefing room of what was now called alpha base, waiting for the arrival of the last of the fifteen-man assault team.

It had been four months since he and his squad had freed the labor camp. Now, these same labor workers were part of his new rebellion.

When the last of the team arrived, he began. "Okay. Today’s mission should be short and sweet. A simple grab and go. The N’Roth have been throwing us curve balls lately, so be prepared for anything.

"As usual, we have a list of items we want. They should be on your digital pads, but we don’t want the N’Roth to know we can tap into their comms or database, so we are taking everything we can so it just looks random.

Does everyone have your A.L.S.’s? he asked.

Everybody in the briefing room raised an arm to reveal their antilife sign bands.

"Good. Intel tells us that the N’Roth have been beefing up their security, and they started using L.S.D.’s now. This means from now on, no one leaves these caves without wearing one of the A.L.S. devices.

Kyle is going to brief you on a new weapon design. Aurik stepped aside, allowing Kyle to step up to the raised platform and take the lead as he snatched up the rifle next to him.

Okay, ya’ll, this is an S-123. He lifted the rifle up.

It was almost identical to the original N’Roth rifles, except the trigger mechanism had been altered to better equip a human’s grip, like all of the N’Roth rifles now. An additional alteration was in the buttstock. It was much larger than the standard rifle and had what looked like a second buttstock above the first. The barrel also had a second, larger barrel set on top of the original. It looked as if two N’Roth rifles had been fused together.

I call her that because when you use her new addition, you hear a hissing sound, and you must hold the trigger down for three seconds before she fires, but she’ll clear a good grouping of enemy soldiers or punch through slight armor.

    He pointed to the buttstock.

Ya’ll will want to set her tightly around your shoulder, like this. He set the altered buttstock onto his shoulder, the two ends sitting around his shoulder with the top resting over his shoulder and the bottom resting at his armpit. Because it packs a punch when she fires.

He turned the S-123 sideways, revealing a bright red switch. This is how you charge her up. When the switch is down, it is just another rifle. When you flip it up, that’s when she’ll tear ya a new one if you don’t hold her tight. This’ll be the first time she’s tested in the field, so I’ll be takin’ her out this time. Kyle turned to Aurik and nodded, then sat back down.

Let’s hope she works as good in combat as she did during trials, Aurik said as he stepped back up to the platform. Okay. Take a few moments to review your digital pads and break into your teams.

Sarah stood in what was now labeled the infirmary. It was one of the larger chambers in the maze of tunnels, and it worked well for what she needed. Over the last few months, the resistance had acquired a good many items for the infirmary, but there was still much to be desired.

The whole cavern system now had lighting, thanks to the combination of the generators Jessica created and the power cells. It was warm too, thanks to the tunnel and heat fissure Kyle had found.

After Kyle had shown Jessica where the tunnel was, she had made it a priority to create a ventilation system to keep the caverns warm.

Sarah spent much of her free time in the infirmary now. She did go on missions, but far fewer and mostly only if her medical skills were anticipated.

She now had the task of instructing a few members of their small army in the ways of medicine, who would be coming in any minute for training. She was looking forward to being able to get back out in the field more actively, but as long as she was the only one with her degree of medical knowledge, she would be stuck on inactive duty.

After the mission briefing, Jessica and her handful of techies prepared for their role in the supply heist. Using the idea from the arm tracker technology, Jessica had developed a scanning device that detected any type of energy sources. This way, she and her team could detect any tracking devices in the compartments of the supply crates.

It had already detected one such tracker, and the raiding team left it, but not before tossing all of the equipment out and taking just a few items so the N’Roth assumed that they didn’t need any of the supplies.

Now they scanned the cases and took what wasn’t tracked. She had been looking for ways to disable the trackers with no success as she couldn’t study one without alerting the N’Roth of their location, and there was no way she would bring one into their base, even if the signal couldn’t penetrate the rock. The N’Roth would know where the signal stopped—and that would bring them right to their doorstep.

Aurik, Kyle, and Yin led the assault team of fifteen through the forest. Their black N’Roth-human hybrid uniforms, a surprisingly good combination for comfort and ease of movement during combat, allowed them a measure of stealth rather than the civilian clothing they’d had just a few months ago.

One of the rescued prison camp workers had skill with clothing, and so he applied it to his newfound role in the resistance and was able to dye the N’Roth uniform black and combined it with more combat-ready gear made from heavier material that held various assault items such as grenades, flashlights, food rations, and the like.

After a mile, Aurik threw up his hand in a circular motion. The assault team all took a knee as Aurik and Kyle vanished into the thick brush surrounding the low-hanging branches of a large tree. Seconds later, Kyle emerged, holding aside the branches, and the strike team disappeared into the cover of the tree.

Once through the tree branches, they made their way down through a concealed entryway and down a long underground tunnel, Kyle un-snagging a branch as he vanished into the trap door, the entrance slamming shut above him.

The tunnel was small, but it did its job. They had to hunch over to keep from hitting their heads on the ceiling, and it was ominously dark with the exception of their flashlights.

They had no room to maneuver for the majority of the length of the tunnel, but every few hundred yards, it opened up into a small alcove that allowed more movement.

After several miles, Aurik halted the team at a numbered alcove, signaling that they were close to their exit.

We’ll rest here for just a minute, Aurik said.

The team stretched and relaxed as best they could with the knowledge that they were about to head into combat, and a few minutes later, Aurik broke the tense silence.

Jessica, you and your team, as usual, hang back and guard the rear until you’re called for, he ordered.

    Roger that, she replied.

Okay, ready your weapons, Aurik ordered, then started down the final section of the tunnel.

Aurik opened the trap door slowly, scanning the surroundings, then climbed out and took a knee, his rifle up at the ready. Seconds later, the rest of the strike team knelt tactically with their rifles up.

They were hidden behind a ring of heavy brush with the center cleared out. They could barely see beyond the brush circling them, but that also meant that the N’Roth couldn’t see through the brush either.

Aurik stood tall, peering down the muzzle of his rifle, and pushed his way through the brush, kneeling back down again a few feet on the other side. The assault team followed Aurik’s lead, and again, seconds later, the assault team knelt tactically waiting for the signal to begin their advance. Aurik stood, waving a hand forward, and the team broke off into three groups of five, single file, crouching low with their weapons up and ready to fire. Jessica and her two techs took up the rear guard, and as they tactically advanced, every few seconds they turned a slow spin, keeping an eye out for any N’Roth approaching from the rear.

A few minutes of marching led them close to the landing pad, and they slowed as they neared the perimeter, hearing the engines of the supply shuttle as it began its ascent into the atmosphere. By the time they reached the pad, the shuttle had vanished into the sky and they were left with just the guards and supply workers. Human work crews worked on erecting a force field of some kind or stacking large metal and wooden crates on a cargo carrier. Several dozen N’Roth soldiers stood spread out among the workers, guarding the crews

Well, this makes things a bit more difficult, Kyle said.

We were told they would have more guards, Aurik replied.

Yeah, but not . . . Kyle paused while he counted the N’Roth. Thirty-five.

Well, it was bound to happen, Aurik replied. We’ll just have to figure out a new way to raid their supplies. I’m surprised it took them this long to start putting that force field up.

Aurik pointed to the tower on the far side of the pad.

Do you think your new toy can hit that?

Kyle inspected the tower. Well, I think I have a better chance of causing more ruckus if I shoot into the hangar. Try and hit one of them canisters that might, ya know, get blasted around.

Okay. Take a shot on my order. Aurik turned around, pulling out an N’Roth grenade canister from his
