    An Introduction to Crystal-Gazing Secrets

    The image of the fortuneteller gazing into her crystal ball is everywhere in our culture. It is an image of power that continues to resonate. The fortuneteller knows things. Being able to see further into the future than others gives her an amazing advantage.

    In theory, if you cross her palms with the appropriate amount of silver, then she should be able to share what she sees to give you that advantage too.

    And yet.

    The moment the fortuneteller appears on the scene in a movie or novel, we somehow know instantly that two things will happen:

    Clouds will swirl within the crystal to suggest the visions she is seeing of our main character's fate.

    She will describe the fate of our main character in the least helpful and most ambiguous terms possible, so that no matter how the story comes out, we may be sure the prophecy is somehow fulfilled.

    Of course, this sort of fortune-telling is most unhelpful. What is the purpose of divining the future if we can't understand what we are told or what we're supposed to do to correct the outcome?

    To speak plainly: This movie version of crystal gazing is a myth. Nobody would bother to keep consulting the crystal ball, and they wouldn't pay money for it if all they got for their trouble was a lot of grief.
