When he arrived at Toledo, Saban knew what he wanted and didn’t waste any time informing his new team of his expectations. He immediately set up a winter conditioning program that would become a key ingredient to his success.

When you take over a new organization, you must establish a clear standard from the very first day. If not, you’ll face resistance from your employees.

Saban’s first foray into the NFL was difficult. He was handed a rowdy group of players who seemed to relish making their stern position coach’s life miserable. But he stuck to his plan, and the defensive backs eventually bought into his vision.

When Saban took over at Michigan State in 1995, he came with a reputation as one of the NFL’s top defensive coordinators after four seasons of learning under Bill Belichick with the Cleveland Browns. He immediately changed the culture to his liking.

It was difficult to change the culture at Alabama, but after the first team meeting, the new regime sent a message that they would work hard. It took weeks to get used to Mannie’s high-intensity style, but players grew to love it.
