#1 The most important job of parents is to prepare their kids for the real world, which is vastly different than the one in which we grew up. As a child, I was taught that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I had no idea that salvation was a concept foreign to many kids today. In the book The State of Christian America, authors Michael Wear and Philip beautiful explain how with all of our influence, we can’t know for sure that our kids are hearing about Jesus at home. -> One of the most important jobs of parents is to prepare their kids for the real world, which is vastly different than the one in which we grew up. As children, we were taught that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, but today many kids don’t know that salvation is a concept foreign to them.

#2 If your kids are anything like me, they will be question askers. If you give them access to the Internet, they will be introduced to many different worldviews, and you won’t be able to stop them from exploring them.

#3 Your kids will be exposed to different worldviews on the internet, and you can’t stop them from exploring them. Instead of trying to stop them from being exposed to these ideas, teach them how to think critically about them.

    Insights from Chapter 1

    #1

As parents, we have the honor of training, molding, and educating our offspring from birth until they become functioning members of society. We can no longer rely on Western culture to reinforce our Christian beliefs, and we cannot ignore the fact that youth are leaving the church in droves.

    #2

The Internet was not around when I was a kid, so if my parents had told me that Christianity was true, I would have believed them. Instead, I was given access to Google, which introduced me to the god(s) of Islam, Baha’i, and Zoroastrianism.

    #3

The difference between teaching our kids to base their spiritual foundation on the experience of Jesus Christ and basing it on Jesus Christ is that experiences and emotion change over time and in unpredictable ways.

    #4

Apologetics is the defense of your faith, and it is important to realize that not everyone is going to be interested in it. However, it is easy to miss the importance of apologetics if you haven’t witnessed the sheer number of victims being held captive to bad philosophy.

    #5

The youth exodus refers to the percentage of Christian youth who stop attending church. This includes those who go on to declare themselves atheists, agnostics, or more recently, none (that is, of no religious affiliation).

    #6

The problem of young Christians disconnecting from church is widespread. In a 2006 Barna study, 61 percent of twenty-somethings who had attended church as teens were no longer spiritually engaged.

    #7

Leaving the faith and leaving the church are not necessarily the same thing. Some are leaving organized religion, while others are leaving biblical authority. They want to create a religious buffet to suit their own tastes.

    #8

The cultural hostility towards Christianity has increased exponentially during the past 12 years, as has the number of religious exiles parenting their own children.

    #9

The youth exodus is a result of peer pressure and cultural chaos, and it won’t leave your kids alone. We can’t lighten your laundry load, but we can help address some of the myths surrounding the youth exodus.

    #10

The reasoning that kids will rebel and leave the church is because of the boomerang effect. But not all kids rebel, and not all kids leave the church. Christianity has become less socially acceptable, which means that not only are we losing the non-boomerang youth exodus adults, but also the nonbelieving adults who never had faith yet would explore it for the sake of their kids.

    #11

The myth of the Christian insurance plan is that
