Writing Your Non-Fiction Book - Alex Gazzola
Introduction
Everybody has a book in them, so they say.
While the sceptics may joke that ‘in’ is the best place for most of these unwritten works, determined aspiring authors shouldn’t be put off by the nay-sayers. If you are committed to writing, selling and publishing a book, then that goal is something you should not be deterred from pursuing.
But it won’t be easy.
This ebook tells you what you need to know, as well as the common mistakes and stumbling blocks to avoid, on the road ahead.
What to write?
When asked, most with the ambition to write a book will confirm that it’s a novel which is actually stirring within.
I can’t help feeling this is a shame. After all, over 90% of published books aren’t novels, and non-fiction authorship places less emphasis on exceptional writing skills and powers of imagination (both relatively rare in aspiring writers), and more on research skills, factual knowledge and the ability to clearly communicate ideas (all more common).
In other words — writing and selling non-fiction is easier. Much easier.
Non-fiction concerns facts. It can concern stories, of course — but only true stories. Non-fiction is grounded in reality. And in the post-truth world in which we find ourselves, where opinion is too often presented as uncontested truth and dogma has power, facts have never been as important, nor as interesting, as they presently are. There is so much out there to explore, to learn, to investigate, and to communicate, to set straight, to debunk, to challenge.
The opportunities are endless. Truth is not only stranger than fiction, but it’s arguably also more relevant and more vital than it has ever been.
Of course, it’s not just about the writing. There’s quite a lot of work ‘around’ the writing too. For convenience, we can divide a non-fiction book project into three stages:
Coming up with the idea for a book, proposing it to a publisher — and selling it.
Agreeing the deal, then researching the book — and writing it.
Preparing for the publication of the book — and promoting it.
Roughly, that’s the ‘before’, the ‘during’, and the ‘after’ of non-fiction authorship.
Let’s begin.
Part 1: Before the Book
Could you write and sell a non-fiction book?
There are two questions to ask yourself:
Have you written professionally before?
Is there any subject about which you have in-depth knowledge?
