Publishing a book in this internet age is quite simple, everybody can self publish once you have a laptop and internet access.However been a very successful self published author isn't that simple.In order to be very successful as a self-published author, you need to have the mindset of a business person and see your book as the end product you are introducing to the market place.
Let say you intend to manufacture a pen, the first thing you want to do before you start the process of manufacturing is to do market research.The same way you should do market research for your book before you start writing.
You need to be able to gather the following information during your market research.

Who is benefiting from your book?
What is the age bracket of people buying your book?
What is the demography of people buying your book?
