Clinging To The Future - Rebekah Nance

    1

It’s been ten years since explosion of the Indigonian manor, and almost sixty people were killed, with the exception of three: Kit, Calla Lilly, and Hazel.

Hazel, being a spell caster and having built up magic over the centuries, conjured up a magic shield around herself, Calla Lilly and Kit. Celeste had tried getting to the shield to be with her little family, but the waves from the explosion knocked her back, making her hit her head, which killed her.

The people of Indigonia mourned the loss of the staff, lords and ladies who inhabited the manor, but no more so than Hazel, Calla Lilly and Kit.

They’d moved in with Emmitt and Isabella in Rosiary, so Emmitt could be with his firstborn daughter more often until Calla Lilly, Kit and Hazel got back on their feet and move out to another place on Gnypso.

A memorial for the victims of the explosion has since been built in the heart of Indigonia, where the manor once was.

Calla Lilly, now twelve, never fully healed from losing her mother and unborn sibling, and Kit never fully healed from losing his wife and unborn child. Hazel never fully healed from losing her granddaughter, unborn great-grandchild, and sister.

When the explosion occurred, and the casualties were identified, Kazamir was put to death by hanging for killing almost sixty people.

Hazel hasn’t forgiven herself for not being more caring towards her son.

Now, Hazel, Calla, and Kit are packing up what things they had procured over the last decade whilst living in the manor in Rosiary.

It’s moving day, and the three survivors of the Indigonian manor explosion are moving to a house in Bellamy (which is in Rosiary) so they can be closer to Emmitt, for Calla’s sake. Kit’s sister, Kessia, is going to take over ruling Eburnean as a lady in a year, when she turns 18.

Kit is suddenly met with a flashback of the explosion:

Everything is quiet. Kit and Hazel are playing with Calla while Celeste is on the windowseat, reading a book.

All of a sudden, a shaking is felt.

Earthquake? Kit asks, looking over at his wife.

I’m not sure, Kit. Celeste replies.

The shaking stops a minute after it had started.

Well, that was a bit weird. Earthquakes aren’t all that common in this region of Indigonia. Hazel points out.

That’s when all hell breaks loose, an explosive setting off from the center of the manor, killing nearly everyone.

Kit looks on in horror, having turned his stepdaughter’s face towards his chest, at Celeste trying to get to him, Calla and Hazel before the explosion reaches them as Hazel puts up the shield.

But she doesn’t make it before the wave of the explosion knocks Celeste back, making her hit her head, which caused her untimely demise.

Kit shakes his head out of his memories as his stepdaughter touches his arm, knowing he’s having more and more flashbacks nowadays.

    Kit, are you okay?

    I’m fine, Calla.

Calla looks at her stepfather skeptically, but, after the moment passes, she heads back to her area of the room and continues packing her things. Hazel is downstairs with the manor staff, trying to help perfect their recipe for her summer stew.

Calla, while she’s packing, touches the locket her stepfather had given her; it contains a lock of her late mother’s hair. Calla has been having more and more dreams about her mother, and then they turn into nightmares, reminding Calla of her great loss.

She’s kept those nightmares a secret for the past ten years, laughing them off as just bad dreams, instead of bad memories. Kit suspects that Calla has been having nightmares more frequently about that terrible day, but he doesn’t confront her about them, not wanting to put a strain on their relationship.

Kit and Calla continue packing in silence, not speaking a word to one another.

After they’ve finished packing, the two stand side by side, looking at the remains of their room, filled with furniture for the movers to take to their new estate. Their estate is at the edge of Bellamy, close to the manor in Rosiary.

It wasn’t easy finding a new place for them to live for just Hazel, Calla and Kit, so, with the pity money Indigonia had paid the three survivors, the trio had gotten an estate with their money, having a few thousand zikapia left over to spend for their pleasure.

Isabella and Emmitt have since welcomed another child, a little girl they named Celeste. Calla is less than thrilled about having another half-sibling, even at the age of twelve, but she doesn’t really bother her nine-year-old half-sister; she and Victoria usually just keep to themselves most of the time. They don’t really gang up on their younger sister, they just let her be.

Despite all of that, little Celeste loves to follow around her older sisters, but her mother and father know when to step in if Celeste oversteps her sisters’ boundaries, or Calla or Victoria overstep hers.

After the birth of their youngest daughter, Celeste, Isabella was told she will not be able to have any more children. Isabella reassured the healer that she has no problem with just having the two children.

Now, Calla and Kit are watching as the movers load their things onto the moving carriage to take to their new estate. Hazel walks up to Calla’s side, taking her great-granddaughter’s hand in her own.

Are we ready for a brand-new adventure? Hazel asks her little family.

As ready as I’ll ever be, Grandma Hazel. Calla replies to her.

Then, let’s go, peoples! Hazel says, a bit less enthusiastically than usual.

Wait! Emmitt and Isabella exclaim, Victoria and little Celeste trailing behind them.

The three turn, and they face the royals of Rosiary.

Can’t I have a goodbye hug from my eldest little girl? Emmitt asks.

Of course, Dad. Calla says, walking up to her father and hugging him.

Call me when you get settled, alright?

    I will, Dad. I promise.

That’s my eldest girl. Safe travels, everyone. We wish you the best of luck in Bellamy.

Thank you, Emmitt. Kit says, before turning away.

    Hey, Kit? Emmitt asks.

Yes? Kit replies, turning back towards Emmitt.

Take care of Calla, will you? And Hazel?

    You have my word, Emmitt.

Good. I’ll hold you to it.

The two young men laugh, reminding Kit of when he and his late brother-in-law Quentin shared laughs and funny stories a decade ago.

The trio of survivors head into the carriage that will take them to Bellamy.

Meanwhile, back in Hartreusia, Luana and Nona are discussing plans for their first dinner as a five-person family (the fourth and fifth people being Luana’s parents, Carter and Juniper), having recently adopted a little six-year-old girl named Emmalina. She’s a white girl like Nona, with blonde hair and green eyes.

I was thinking roast chicken, or maybe Hazel’s summer stew?

I’d go with the roast chicken, Lu. We’ve had plenty of Hazel’s summer stew lately, since the kitchen staff here have nearly perfected her recipe.

That’s not a bad idea, Nona.

    Thank you, my love.

Emmitt, Isabella, Victoria and little Celeste are all expected to be guests at the feast to welcome Emmalina to her new home in Hartreusia. Calla Lilly, Hazel and Kit will all be in attendance as well.

That evening, the seven guests arrive to the feast, and they all sit in the formal dining room.

I’d like to propose a toast, to our new daughter, Emmalina, and to all those lives lost in the manor explosion in Indigonia. Today marks ten years since that terrible day. Luana says, raising her goblet of wine.

Everyone toasts to Emmalina, and the lives lost in Indigonia ten years ago.

Now, would Emmalina like to speak a few words about her new position as the future crown princess of Hartreusia? Her coronation is next month, and we hope all of you will attend. Nona asks her daughter.

    Yes, Mum.

    Go ahead, dear.

Emmalina clears her throat and raises her goblet of water.

I’d like to thank you all for attending my coronation next month. I grew up in an orphanage, so I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Queen Luana and Queen Consort Nona, aka Mama and Mum. I thank them each day for adopting me, allowing me to be a part of their family, and hopefully I’ll one day get to rule over all of you...I mean that in the best way possible.

Thank you, Emmalina, for that wonderful toast. Juniper says, hugging her granddaughter.

    You’re welcome, Grandmum.

The feast starts, and soon, the guests head to their guest chambers for the night, while Luana and Nona tuck their daughter into bed.

    Mama, Mum?

Yes, sweetheart? Luana asks, sitting on the edge of her daughter’s bed.

Will I really become queen in twelve years?

"If you want to, you can. If not, I’m sure Giana, your first cousin once removed, will happily take
