    Lady Carolla Integra’s blood rushed to her nose. Her delicate vessels had burst again in the heat of the swamp where her astoundingly rich ancestors had decided, in their inscrutable inbred logic, to build their castle, and none of her would-be suitors so much as offered a kerchief. Such un-mannered rogues that passed for gentry! She formed her fingers like the pincers of a swamp crab to compress the bridge of her nose, but she was too late: a single crimson drop escaped, certain to crash spectacularly against her expensive, but overly constrictive and bosom-enhancing dress, ruining it forever. A pale, sexy stranger intercepted this drop with his gaunt forefinger and brought it to his lips. Lady Integra’s dress was saved! But who was this uninvited stranger?

    She would not find out, for he had vanished as quickly and as stealthily as he had appeared. No one but she had noticed. No one, that is, except her devilish second (and by dint of in-breeding, third and fifth) cousin, William Zane.

    Who was that peasant? he laughed in a tone that communicated that such a person was both unwelcome in their social stratum, but also that he could not be much bothered by the intrusion, as he was above such matters.

    Integra did not answer, for she was still lost in the reverie of the mysterious nose-blood-drinking stranger.
