It was morning and Nana was outside in the backyard, hanging wet clothes on the line to dry. Whero, the fat ginger cat, was lying on the grass near her, stretched out in the light and warmth of Tamanuiterā, the sun.

A breeze blew in from the south causing Nana’s long, grey hair to sway. She raised her head, closed her eyes and listened.

‘Haere mai, my moko!’ Nana cried. ‘Bring the car keys, my kete and tokotoko!’

Cousins, Pipi and Pou, knew what that meant. They put down their devices and ran outside.

    ‘What’s up, Nan?’ Pipi asked.

    ‘Was he here?’ Pou questioned.

He walked to the corner of the house to check the driveway for any sign of a visiting car.

‘He’s the father of wind, boy!’ Nana frown-ed. ‘He’s not driving around in a BMW!’

    Her demeanour softened.

‘His words are in the breeze,’ she proclaimed, gesturing at the air around her with her hands.

‘Right,’ Pipi muttered, sharing a glance with Pou.

It wasn’t unusual for their grandmother to talk to things that others couldn’t see.

Pipi knelt down and patted Whero.

‘I guess we’ll be seeing you later then, puss,’ she said.

The fat cat rolled over showing his underbelly.

Pou followed Nana over to her old car. ‘And it’s not an earthquake?’

‘Kāo,’ Nana repeated. ‘It’s something else, that’s why we need to go and
