About this ebook

Kylan

When my partner met her mate, I thought we could make things work. But she's only made my life more difficult and abandoned our sons. This last time is the last straw.

So, I returned home to Huntsville, the pack that took me in when I was a cub and taken from my parents. Here they loved me like one of their own, and I can only hope they'll love my sons too.

When we arrive, the last thing I expect is a new scent in the air that I cannot shake. Mate. Mate. Mate.

The urge is strong, yet it's my best friend's little sister. Would Damien forgive me for defiling his kin? Because God help me, I can't get it out of my mind.

But I'm a Lion with baggage. I can't ask Cam to burden herself ... Can I?

Cambrie

I've been in love with my brother's best friend for as long as I can remember, but he's a devoted father who only sees me as another little kid to take care of.

He's never seen me as anything more than the little girl who used to run around after him, begging to be taken along. So why would he suddenly see me for the woman I've become?

But when another fight with his ex brings him to Huntsville, I know this is my chance to prove that I'm more than just his friend's little sister. I am his mate, and I can love his sons like my own.

So, I'll do what it takes to show him this is real. I know how long he's been waiting for his mate and I've waited long enough for him to realize it's me.

My eyes flicked over to where they were building a castle out of blocks. Rigby picked up another piece and bashed it against the top, making the whole thing topple over as Jude let out a cry of alarm.

Hey, hey, c’mon, that wasn’t very nice. Jude’s been working very hard on this. I pointed at the block rubble. Pick it back up and help him fix it.

Rigby had been acting out for a few weeks. I had my suspicions, one of them I was currently trying to deal with, and the other was that maybe they were getting close to shifting age. I was around their age the first time I shifted, and that energy … well, it got pent-up, and you looked for a release wherever you could get it. None of it was productive, though.

The phone line finally clicked on, and my ex reappeared.

Sorry, this weekend isn’t going to work. A soft buzzing began in my ears and steadily grew as I stood there in shocked silence. Kylan? Are you still there? I willed myself to try and say something, but anger was the only emotion I could process right now. Listen, I know you’re probably mad, but I spoke to Francis, and he reminded me we had plans this weekend, so it just won’t work. Okay? We’ll figure something else out another time.

Crossing the room in four quick steps, I went into my bedroom and closed the door so the boys couldn’t hear me.

"Karey, listen to me … I don’t care what your mate says. These are your sons, your flesh and blood. Their bond is unbreakable, but their hearts can be broken, which is exactly what you do every time you make a promise to them and break it. I get it. They’re not sons by your mate. That sucks. Sorry I wasn’t the one. But they’re still your fucking sons, so grow a goddamn heart and make plans to see them."

A roar built up in my chest when I was finished speaking, cutting off the last of my words. It didn’t have the same majestic effect it was supposed to as she bristled on the other end of the line.

You will not speak to me like that, Kylan Baker. You’re right. They are my sons, which means I’m the mother of your sons, and you will not treat me with such disrespect, or I’ll …

"Or you’ll what, Karey? Not be around? Because you’re doing a stand-up fucking job of that now without having to threaten to do it. Not seeing them shouldn’t be a punishment to them or me, so go back to that douche of a mate of yours and tell him your sons are coming over whether his puny little ass likes it or not. Because I know he’s threatened by them because if they’re lions like me, they could eat his squirrely ass for breakfast. Maybe they will, who fucking knows. If you continue to treat them like second-class citizens … maybe they will."

She huffed, and I could practically hear her eyes rolling. I cannot, and will not, speak to you when you are this worked up, Kylan. Get yourself under some semblance of control, and I’ll have a productive conversation with you. But if you’re just interested in throwing around immature, petty jabs, then I’m not interested.

She fucking hung up. Agh! I threw the phone across the room, watching it go right into the drywall, hit a beam, and bounce back toward my feet, shattered completely.

Inhaling sharply, I tried to find my calm when all I wanted to do was pace a hole to hell in my bedroom floor. Finally emerging from the room, I found both boys staring at me—so much for trying to keep them from hearing me.

So, I began, offering them what I hoped was a comforting smile, you won’t be going to your mom’s this weekend. Their fallen little faces hit me like a ton of bricks, stealing my breath and making it feel like my chest was collapsing in on itself. But— I paused, trying
