()
About this ebook
A Woman’s Book of Inspiration collects hundreds of quotations from women the world over. Gathered from writers and politicians, adventurers and musicians, activists and scientists, their words are a testament to women everywhere, the struggles they have had to overcome, and the tools they used to do so.
Includes:
- Amelia Earhart: “Please know that I am aware of the hazards. I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”
- Isabel Allende:“I can promise you that women working together—linked, informed, and educated—can bring peace and prosperity to this forsaken planet.”
- Gloria Vanderbilt:“I’ve always believed that one woman’s success can only help another woman’s success.”
- Margaret Thatcher: “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.”

INTRODUCTION
Nevertheless, she persisted.
During and after the election of 2016, the role of women in society and women’s rights took on a new urgency, reflected particularly in a surge of activism and engagement that hasn’t been seen in decades. Women young and old are joining forces to speak out on issues ranging from health care to reproductive rights, wage inequality, and transparency in government. But women have been confronting daunting challenges from the dawn of recorded history. What is true then and now is that women persevere. The hundreds of quotations in A Woman’s Book of Inspiration come from women of all backgrounds and present a fascinating spectrum of ideas, perspectives, and insights.
Of the many universal themes that emerge, there is the love of family; the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice; the quest for knowledge; and the desire for peace and an end to poverty. The quotations themselves, however, are as singular as the women who voiced them. In the excerpts that follow, Virginia Woolf reveals her secret to happiness; Isabel Allende, Melinda Gates, and Sheryl Sandberg speak passionately about empowering women; and Jane Austen, Jane Fonda, Roxane Gay, and Zadie Smith reflect on the true nature of female friendship.
Elsewhere, women reveal some of the profound joys and struggles from their own lives. Harriet Tubman recalls the moment she knew she would die for her freedom. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Mindy Kaling, and Diane Keaton lovingly recall their mothers; while Tina Fey, Jodie Foster, and Meryl Streep share insights into their own motherhood. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Helen Mirren, and Emma Watson exchange very personal views on feminism; while Angelina Jolie, Hedy Lamarr, Amy Schumer, and Kerry Washington reflect on notions of women and beauty.
In an engaging dialogue that captures a rich array of voices, the contributors also exchange views on such subjects as the meaning of love; the value of education; the art of communication; the world of politics; the role of spirituality; and the meaning of success.
A collection that speaks to not only women, but also to the richness of the human experience, A Woman’s Book of Inspiration is a testament to women everywhere, past and present, who embody a spirit of strength, determination, nurturing, and hope that is all their own.
