Conquering The Beast Goldmine - arther d rog

    Introduction

Every day, tens of thousands of people—possibly even hundreds of thousands—decide to look into the possibility of working from home or launching their very own home-based business. They have heard of people who have done it before and have done it very well, possibly even outrageously.

Some of these persons have excellent computing skills. They might even be able to create their own websites. They undoubtedly have a thorough understanding of computer operation. Others lack computer expertise but believe they have a fantastic idea for an online business and are confident that they can find a method to realize their goal.

The Internet truly serves as a tremendous leveler. The amount of formal education a prospective Internet business owner has doesn't seem to have much of an impact on the level of success or failure they can experience online. There are those who have achieved dizzying heights of accomplishment who never finished high school and those who have hit rock bottom who have several college degrees.

The traits shared by persons who are successful at running a home-based business or working from home include:

›  They are all independent thinkers.

›  They have a constructive outlook.

›  They have a desire to learn.

›  They acquire the necessary survival skills since the world is truly a jungle.

You are obviously a self-starter if you are thinking of starting, or have already begun, working from home or a home-based business.

If you didn't have a positive outlook, you wouldn't have ever contemplated such an endeavor.

You are reading this book, so you must be eager to learn.

The Internet business world is akin to an electronic jungle. There are lions, tigers, and bears, oh my, in the lyrics made famous in The Wizard of Oz. The basis for success and survival is not education. Both of them are predicated on learning how to survive.

    Chapter 1

    Lions are present.

Funny! There is nothing that says you have just entered an uncontrolled jungle when you get into the Internet. They are out there, even though you can't see any wild animals that are planning to make you their supper or hear any roaring lions or other foreboding noises. Just a disguise, really.

These dangerous personalities won't necessarily appear in any particular order, although some of the first ones you'll probably run into are what I like to call the welcoming committee.

    Selling Free Stuff

This welcoming committee's goal is to sell you things that are readily available online for free if you know where to seek.

    Antivirus Defense

Antivirus software will be the first thing you are instructed to purchase. There are currently some excellent anti-virus products available for purchase. However, if your resources are slightly limited, you are not need to purchase pricey antivirus software.

Yes, your computer needs to be protected against viruses. There is no question regarding that. There are many creeps on the Internet that like infecting computers with trojans, worms, and viruses. That is not something you or your computer want to happen.

Some people simply invent up new, sneaky methods to cause issues for the rest of us during every waking hour. Fortunately, there are just as many decent people who devote their time to figuring out how to stop them from harming us.

Norton and McAfee are two of the most well-known anti-virus solutions available, and both are excellent programs. Additionally, both of them are rather pricey. Although McAfee is more expensive than Norton, neither of them is very expensive, and neither is free.

However, there is also a pretty good one that is entirely free. AVG offers a variety of antivirus and security software options, as well as a free edition. This free version operates flawlessly and offers lots of security. AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-anti-virus-free-edition/lng/us/tpl/tpl01) is where you can download this program for free.

    Firewalls

Today's computers typically have firewalls pre-installed. That function was added by Windows to XP. When you bring it home, your computer already has it.

It doesn't mean that members of the welcome-to-the-jungle committee won't try to sell you a firewall even though you already have one that is adequate to secure your computer.

You'll be informed that the one on your computer failed to keep you safe. You'll get these tiny pop-ups informing you that your machine needs to be scanned.

Of course, the scan is free. The aim of the scan is to try and convince you to buy something you don't need, usually a firewall, though there are other apps as well.

You already have a firewall, and adding more firewalls won't make you any more protected. In fact, they obstruct one another. It is better for you to continue using the firewall that came with your computer.

    'Courses' for instruction

On the Internet, there are a lot of excellent educational courses to choose from. There are even more completely fake educational courses available online. They just present you with information that is easily accessible for free and charge you a lot of money to do so.

One of the absolute worst I've seen claims to teach you data input. Data entry or data entry work are in no way related to this course. It teaches you how to enroll in affiliate networks and post Google Ad Words advertisements for the related goods.

An Internet company that can be quite profitable is affiliate marketing. Although it is difficult to learn, it is a legitimate Internet business. This program tries to pass itself off as data entry while actually being affiliate marketing in order to con young stay-at-home moms, retirees, and others into spending $50 on a program that will be of no use to them at all if they are looking for a work-at-home job and are unable to put in the more than 100 hours per week needed to launch a successful affiliate marketing business.

Observe this. Anyone with a computer, an Internet connection, and dollar signs in their eyes can promote educational programs. Some of these so-called helpful people merely compile data that is easily accessible on the Internet, package it, and write some slick advertising before selling it to gullible, diligent newcomers who just haven't yet learned the ropes.

Do some research on the subject being taught before you ever enroll in a course and pay for it. Then, ask yourself the following questions:

›  First Question: Where can I find this information?

›  Is this information really necessary for me to know?

›  Can this information actually benefit me, third question?

›  Is the information being supplied really what it seems to be?

›  Question number five: Is there a warranty?

›  Sixth Question: Will it cost me more money to put the information into practice?

›  How challenging will the competition be?

›  Does the course presume that I know more about computers
