Not using the internet doesn’t mean you’re lonely
I don’t understand this obsession with the ‘lonely millions’ who aren’t online. I think it underestimates how content some people are about not using the internet. I take my 78-year-old mother as an example. Her social life is busier now than it’s ever been. She’s a member of several clubs in the community and manages to do all this by phone, not online.
She scoffed recently when I asked whether not using the internet means she feels lonely. She made the reasonable point that meeting people in the flesh – which admittedly has been difficult recently – is better for mental health
