About this ebook

A poetic journal chronicling the author's experience with rehabilitation from drug and alcohol addiction. A profound and touching exploration of himself and the world around him that is carefully crafted in a variety of poem forms. "The story the poems tell is serious but never so grim that we shut the book. The glimmering of hope, which grows during the journey through the poems, underlies them all. While never proclaiming a triumph, we are left with the distinct impression that the writer will be able to take the newfound strength to prevail." -J. McBride

A Place for the Broken - Sébastien Streit

    Day 1

A haven for the morally broken

Claims to offer freedom through compliance

To rules, where denial, left unspoken,

Is said to surely strengthen reliance

On what led these fine people astray.

So desperate for change the sheep will follow

The path laid down by the shepherd's dismay

But does it promise they won't stay hollow?

He who feels safe venturing from the herd

Is struck down by the wolves of their mind

And slowly as their vision becomes blurred

    They find themselves truly entwined

In the vines of all consuming despair,

Unable to flee from their demon's lair.

    Day 2

    The simplicity of hiding

    Overburdens us with grievance.

Trapped in a cycle of sliding,

    We kneel in our obedience.

    Constantly running, drenched in fear,

The thought of facing shame consumes

    Us to the point that our ears can't hear;

Our breath inhales the burning fumes.

    Hopelessness devours our souls

And taints the love we used to see.

    Slowly losing our self-control;

A slave that wishes to be free.

A deceptive wall holds us in,

We fight battles we cannot win.

    Day 3

How I fear the call of the void,

So tempting as all time does freeze.

For quickly all can be destroyed.

How I fear the call of the void.

By a thread I seem to avoid

    The unwanted yet gentle tease.

How I fear the call of the void,

So tempting as all time does freeze.

    Day 4

    For what I scour,

    The extinct flower

    Hidden from my eye,

    I await my guide.

    Overwhelming fear

    Yet, I hold it dear.

    A cursèd being

    Living and seeing.

    My hope has
