About this ebook

A two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist shreds the GOP’s record of backward policies and abysmal leaders. Luckovich takes aim at the NRA, Trump, Bush, Ted Cruz, and more.

The Twisted History of the GOP is an editorial cartoon exploration into the ongoing crack-up of the Republican party. Once a proud, competent counterbalance to the Democratic party, the GOP began to change in the ’90s with the arrival of Republican representative and future House Speaker Newt Gingrich to Congress, assisted by radical radio host Rush Limbaugh and a new television network, the right-wing, propaganda-spewing Fox News. In the years that followed, they were aided by Mitch McConnell and the George W. Bush and Trump administrations, in transforming the GOP into what it is now: a fascist, racist, anti-science, pro-conspiracy cult, in thrall to the twice-impeached conman and former president, Donald Trump.

These cartoons will shock and delight you, and you won’t be able to look away from Luckovich’s witty editorial wisdom. Combining a rapier wit alongside exceptional caricatures, The Twisted History of the GOP will make you laugh until you cry.

    Early GOP

Once upon a time, the Republican Party was a responsible member of our two-party system. But as America grew more diverse, Republicans began to see a future that wasn’t bright for them. Instead of making itself into a 21st-century party that would attract more voters, the Republican Party doubled down on holding on to their dwindling white voter base by using Fox News and right-wing media to keep those voters scared and angry. Lately, Republicans have become even more brazen, promoting Trump’s big lie that the 2020 election was stolen and using that as a pretext for rigging future elections in various states. Instead of offering solutions, they gave up governing and are only about rewarding their wealthy donors with tax cuts. The Republican Party has become a deformed image of itself, promoting lies and stupidity to their radicalized base, hoping to maintain power.

Bush speaks to a crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial, holding a piece of paper that says, ‘University of Michigan Affirmative Action Policy.’ He says into a podium mic, ‘I have a dream that one day, men will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by their alumni connections …’
