Arcana’s Bestiary Page 1 Review Written by Talitha

And so, the Cockatrice of Licorne was slain thanks to the combined efforts of the magician Batel, the cleric Marie, the warrior Johan and, of course, me – the great thief and writer Talitha. I simply let Batel and Marie take charge and then claimed the victory later.

Batel was more interested in where the Cockatrice came from rather than partying and drinking like Johan. At the end of the ordeal, he was given a receipt of purchase stating that it was bought from a company named ‘Arcana’s Shadow’ which creates these hybrid monsters and uses the port town of Sirene to smuggle them into the country.

So, we headed to Sirene. Who knows what monsters we’ll encounter and what precious treasures I might get to steal?

Magic flows through the world; a blessing from the goddess Arcana. Mankind has many names for this miraculous power – Sangterre, meaning blood of the earth, is the name that has survived the passage of time. Magic allows mankind to cast spells and enchantments. It also gives rise to monsters – the naturally occurring ones that dominate the planet’s food chain and the artificially engineered ones that were once set loose upon an unsuspecting land.

    1 – L’Offre du Seigneur

    Nightfall – Sirene Dock

La Mer Étroite is still tonight. Too still.

Batel stood at the water’s edge and licked the salt from his lips. His purple robes caught in the sea breeze and he shivered from the cooling air filling out his sleeves. I’ve never been a sea person. There’s too much hiding beneath the waves. Scrunched in his hand, a piece of parchment delivered by a carrier pigeon which had inauspiciously landed on his enchanted halberd’s spike earlier that afternoon; the penmanship was calligraphic, or at least it attempted to be – Batel’s eyes caught the erratic pen strokes. Someone’s acting above their position. The message read:

I have a job for your magician. Come meet me at the docks overlooking the Mercian Channel at nightfall.

    Gulliver.

Mercian Channel? The Mercians, who lived on the other side of the channel, had a habit on stamping their name on lands and bodies of water that were shared rather than owned; he knew the stretch of water as ‘La Mer Étroite’. Batel’s suspicions were matched by his curiosity. I’ve only been in Sirene for a day and I already have a job offer. News from Licorne travels fast but it should not have travelled across the channel. Whoever this Gulliver is, I’m suspicious of him.

Something in the sea air gnawed at him.

This whole town sleeps with fear. As a warning, the enchanted silver axe-head at the top of his halberd glowed a faint lilac; Batel was wary of an ambush. He gripped the Sangterre-treated oak pole tightly, ready to swing his halberd the moment danger showed itself; the runes etched on the axe-head were ready to express his magic. I have enemies here. I’m sure I’ve been spotted by agents of Arcana’s Shadow. I don’t like being summoned into the open but I need to draw out those residing in the gloom.

‘You received my message, magician,’ a male voice called out, his tongue catching on the final word.

Batel noted the resentment and took a moment before turning to face his summoner. And he’s already disappointed me. Calmly, Batel turned and analysed the approaching stranger’s demeanour. I see he’s from Etellia not Mercia, but he’s trying hard to mask it. Or has he been at sea too long?

A sea captain, his cheeks scarred and skin taut, appeared out of the night air. He wore a black leather jacket that did not sit well on his shoulders – it was as if it was not his to wear. Clearly, he was not a navy man or an officer of any legitimate shipping enterprise. Instead, he wore the aura of a smuggler with pride of infamy and rule breaking.

Batel accepted the reality of the man standing in front of him. I know my companions won’t approve of me dealing with him but I accepted long ago that stopping Arcana’s Shadow will require getting my hands dirty. ‘You must be Gulliver?’

‘I admit I wasn’t expecting the halberd. Magicians usually carry wands ... and wands snap easily.’

Gulliver glided past Batel and then stopped at the dock’s edge to stare out into the calm sea. Being confined to land was proving intolerable to his seafarer’s heart – he was itchy, jumpy, constantly on edge. I miss the rocking of my boat. I miss the thrill of the chase. Soon I’ll be back on the sweet smooth waves.

Batel could not avoid the distain in
