Ruhanna’s Flight
Ruhanna’s fingers scrabbled for the tiny crevices in rocks slick with sea spray. Though the afternoon sun glittered on the choppy waves beyond the shadow of the island, the cliff face was in deep shade. All around her, nesting seagulls squabbled and cawed over the whine of the wind. The tang of salt, seaweed and guano stung her nostrils, and far below, the waves boomed against the jumble of rocks at the base of the cliff. Perhaps this hadn’t been such a good idea. One slip would end in disaster. She swallowed. Don’t look down. Don’t look down.
She fixed her eyes on the cowering cat to her right. Mistwalker’s usually immaculate coat stood out in spikes, his grey-green eyes almost swallowed up by the dark of his pupils. Shifting her weight to her left, she lowered her other leg to the thin ledge that would take her to him, hoping her sandals would grip the friable surface. First one foot, then the next.
